Though we should be winding down for our flu season...

It's apparently a pretty big deal right now. If you don't feel too well for whatever reason and have flu-like symptoms...I wouldn't dick around right now.

EDIT: Reading into it...five cases in Cali and two in Texas in the last week as posted by the CDC.

I read about this earlier today.

My stomach has been acting up, but I don't think it's anything.

Everyone in the United States has apparently recovered without any problems (which is a good sign), but in Mexico... not so good. :\ Could also be a case of different immune systems; I'm sure Mexico gets its share of sickness but maybe people's bodies there take the flu worse than ours do.

Apparently antiviral drugs are effective against fighting the flu which is a very good sign; better to have a weapon than to be totally shut down.

Mexico is taking this very seriously - they closed all schools and universities today, as well as all the soccer games and lucha libre (wrestling) shows in Mexico City at least. So not only are they trying to control this, but they want everyone to STAY AT HOME this weekend, especially if they're sick. Lovely. :\

No cases found in Canada but we put out an alert for anyone who has flu-like symptoms *AND* has been in Mexico within the last two weeks.

Yeah, this virus hit right near me.

And missed me, like the freak power outage in Riverside.

I'm just lucky, hoping it doesn't spread too much...

So it's in Canada now. :\

However, I think it's important to mention that all the cases in Canada and the United States do NOT appear to be life-threatening. It is a potentially serious situation, but I'm still leaning towards the "Mexico wasn't prepared for this" side of the story.

Of course, lower mainland BC.
Oh well. My immune system's pretty strong, and Canada and the US seem to deal with it better.

I'm just wondering when they'll decide to call it a pandemic.

Depends where it goes next. If it gets to Africa or Asia, afaik the general immune system is lower, it'll be bad.

Yea, we're at that point now.

And I saw that Twitter stuff. People are retards. :\

The World Health Organization raised the alert level to Phase 4, meaning there is sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus causing outbreaks in at least one country. Monday was the first time it has ever been raised above Phase 3.

Putting an alert at Phases 4 or 5 signals that the virus is becoming increasingly adept at spreading among humans. Phase 6 is for a full-blown pandemic, characterized by outbreaks in at least two regions of the world.

So yea...not quite pandemic yet, but certainly something to keep an eye out for.

Even though it's still the lead story in Canadian news, we're starting to downplay it quite a bit. I mean, it is the flu, but all the cases we've had are very mild cases, no worse than your average flu bug. Plus they're also stating that the deaths in Mexico may be "the tip of the iceberg", meaning that there may be an extremely large number of cases which haven't been reported - in other words, the mortality rate isn't as high as suspected.

It's still something to be concerned about but it's a H1N1 virus. We can combat that.

CDC's doing the same thing in attempts to downplay it, but that hasn't changed the Phase 4 alert on it. They're still saying it's 'unsustained' which makes no sense considering that a phase 4 says it is. There's a lot of conflicting reports about this.

But yea, the likelihood is it'll affect the majority of us that are used to it like the common cold or flu at worst.

Yeah, so that'll be fun come... oh, probably winter. (I read an analyst saying that if it does become a normal bug, we'd feel it around then.)

And if that's the case, I can't wait for the moment when the media suddenly realizes "oh, wait... it's just a flu bug" and moves on to other things.

I almost thought I had it for a while.

I've had cold after fucking cold after fucking cold this year, so far. Only spent a couple weeks or so without one...

Texas had its first death over it.

Expect things to swing into high gear now.

Still don't think it's worth the thought though...

Now if they start putting blocks on travel, economy will start to dip.

Best thing I've heard, honestly.

Oh...and the followup.
