Wow.

Guess the recession/depression drives a lot there too...

Sounds like bad xenophobia or something...

Although I hear the racism's still fairly high. Why else would I hear the term 'gaijin' so frequently...

You have no idea... the Japanese society is easily one of the most xenophobic, racist and culturally uninformed societies around. Why do you think all Americans depicted in Japanese media are tall, blonde, and huge? Shamed to admit it but I used to be a huge racist simply because I was just raised that way (through my dad/people around me)... but obviously I've realized how ignorant that was

Yeah, as an exchange student I got off pretty light - you're pretty popular when you're the exchange student and the older people actually like you...but I heard that if you're a foreigner and an adult in Japanese society you're basically a second class citizen.

Yea. It doesn't help that the 1940s America introduced terms like, 'Bucktoothed Bastards' and 'Slanties.' :/

At least there are people in Japan saying that this is a bad idea. I think maybe a few years ago it would've been different.

They have made progress, although small, still progress.

A good example of their xenophobia in action is the fact they still use LZH for compressing archives on the internet (it was developed by the Japanese), even though it is literally the worst format for compression.
