Although I'm pretty sure this isn't a needed thread for the people that want to know...it is released officially now.

EXT4 file system is what caught my eye.

EDIT: In reading a little bit further, it's due OUT today but it's apparently late.

One of the better releases of ubuntu. Speed improvements galore (even if you choose not to use ext4, boot time is sick), some visual upgrades, hiccup less install on two of my machines so far (1 more to go). I'd recommend for anyone contemplating the switch to give it a whirl and see how it works for you.

I'm posting this from a Jaunty install. Haven't looked into much yet. Still need to get my video card drivers running properly. I'm using the ext4 file system, of course. Anything you guys want to know, just ask.

My USB install is so fucking wrecked it's scary. Seriously, I'm getting errors that even make me double post :|

So, on the topic of Linux....
my dad has Ubuntu 9.04 installed, and wants to get rid of Vista entirely.
Would putting XP (or the Windows 7 RC) on a virtual machine be feasible for gaming?

It certainly sounds like a viable option.

Alternately, you could just use Wine... in fact, I'd try that first.

The thing is, looking on the Wine site, there's only a handful of games which work decently with it.

Okay... Trying to boot from a USB install created from Ubuntu's own utility leads me to a BusyBox "(initramfs)" prompt. Any idea where to go from there, or do I have to switch to FedoraPuppy? (lmfao fedora won't fit)

If you have an intel processor that supports virtualization, then you can give it a shot in using a virtual machine. Otherwise, it isn't going to work well at all, making the game almost unplayable. It also, depends on what games you are playing and how much 3D graphics needs to be generated.

Well apparently my computer can't handle it. The VM won't even recognize Direct3D.

How'd it break for you, rox?

I'm amazed my Ubuntu install actually still works, on my main comp.

Fairly strong argument for Linux over Microsoft.

Developers just need to start making Linux ports for games (looking at you, Valve...), and I'm sold.

This is probably the chief and perhaps only reason I've not made the jump myself.

Wine is passable for some stuff, but it's nowhere near a native Linux port.

VMware has it, but it's limited (no DX10 for example) and it only works if you're running XP inside the VM.

Reason I haven't switched is because there's a lack of modem drivers available for my modem, and... well, circular dependencies, which are a bitch if you're not online.

...Said dependency issue is why I'll be switching over to Fedora, instead, if I ever do. :/
