You'd think it'd be too early for this when 7 isn't even out on the market yet.

Microsoft doesn't think so.

I'm not quite sure what to say. I wonder how many will see this and just say 'Oh, forget 7, I'll just wait for 8. It's right around the corner."

Theoretically...with this being said...you could STILL SKIP AN OS ENTIRELY with XP still having marketability until at least 2014 (because of their EXTENDED extended service support until that time). It came out in...2001?

That should say enough. :|

You know...I'm pretty sure that a major upgrade would be the end of the NTFS. 2TB is the basic limit of the file system and I believe that you hit the absolute max somewhere around...16PB? I might have that wrong but I know of at least the 2TB one. But they'll probably have stability issues if they don't pull a Linux and try for yet another file sys.

I'll probably end up upgrading to 7 anyways to get out of Vista.

I've been fairly impressed with the install on my Pentium 4, although I haven't used it much.

Still runs what I want fairly decent. I'll probably upgrade to the RC. There are those that already have it on their systems as a preferred OS already that I know.

It is a common practice for software companies to do something like this, this as in starting on the next version when the soon to be released version is in a bug-fixing and testing phase. I highly doubt that Microsoft is planning on more features for Windows 7, because I would think they learned their lesson from Vista's development

Yeah, Windows 7 > Vista. On the other hand, us XP people either have to buy two OSes to get current or reformat.

Given the stakes I'll probably switch off to Linux.

I'm a bit of a technopeon, so I think I'll probably stick with XP until I hear good things about whichever operating system. I don't like Vista (came included on a laptop), and I think I'd want to see how things look before.. taking the plunge, so to speak.

What did I just say in my post? :\

Grab a copy of the 7 RC when it comes out and judge yourself (May 5).

Pff, but that's you. >P

But seriously, I probably won't have any interest in changing things until it seems silly not to.

No but seriously I've tested it out, a lot of service techs that I know have tested it out...we've all come to the conclusion that at least the beta of 7 has more kickassery than anything Vista's ever accomplished.

Agreed. I've heard people say that it's as good or better than XP, but I don't know If I'd go that far with it. Definitely better than Vista overall.

Oh yeah, even the beta was better than Vista. And I didn't mind Vista that much. :/
It helps that we went from a slow computer with XP to a faster computer with Vista, so there wasn't that much of a speed difference.

This must be hell for application developers... They're getting ready for the Windows 7 launch and now MS says "Oh btw, you'll have roughly 2-3 years before you have to rewrite your software for Windows 8"... ;;;

Apple's been doing that for years, too.

All they really need to change is the interface between the software and the OS. If they did things well, not much should be changed in the core of the application.
