Oh come ON...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday unveiled a finding that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare, opening the door to federal regulation of carbon dioxide as a pollutant.

The finding does not "automatically trigger" new carbon rules but could allow the EPA to move forward with limiting greenhouse gas emissions under the federal Clean Air Act.

Rising levels of greenhouse gases "are the unambiguous result of human emissions, and are very likely the cause of the observed increase in average temperatures and other climatic changes," the EPA proposal said.

Environmentalists applauded the decision, while affected industries expressed concern.

It...what...WHAT? CO2's been a massive amount of the atmosphere for over 4 billion years. Not to mention that plant life THRIVES off it and we all RELEASE it. What the hell are they...? GAH!

Next thing you know...another energy tax for CO2. Don't exhale too much!

High levels of CO² are indeed dangerous. How is this surprising to anybody?

Well yea they're harmful in high levels but that's one FUCK of a concentration at that point...nowhere near where we are right now.

They're obviously referring to "endanger human health and welfare", as in it contributes to global warming.

Duh?

I mean that's....kinda the whole...point I...

Anyways, the fact of the matter is that it's just another pile on to go against something that is actually a global COOLING at the rate things are going. I'm surprised Gore hasn't been knocked off his loony-throne yet on this and anything that goes environmentalist anymore tends to be over-reactive more often than not.

How old do you think the Earth is, Sakura?

Don't worry, it's relevant.

Hey, if things like this get us to reduce/eliminate our dependency on oil, then what's the problem?

Okay.

What about you fat people, eh?

You're causing an extra billion 'tonne' of CO2 a year. Shame on you.

That's actually the issue. Most of the alternatives are worse than oil. The alcohol based fuels rip through the atmosphere like a hot knife through butter.

There's also the fuels based off of our crops. Anything based off our food is quite dangerous. Food prices are going to rise as more and more farms begin to produce the crops for fuel. It's like burning bread for heat. Why would you do that?

The idea is to move away from it and increase technology in other fields to make up for it.

I say get that electric car going before we even consider moving. Everything else is just to detrimental to even consider at the moment...

A full quarter of the food grown here is wasted. Are you really going to tell me that using it for fuel is worse than using it to fill landfills?

Also, that fat thing is laughable, at best. "Fat people drive more cars, eat more food." Never mind that if we actually got a viable solution to the fossil fuels thing, both of those problems would pretty much vanish...

EDIT: Here = the US; remembered after posting that there are quite a few foreign members, oops.

Actually, yes I am. That food is bought. It does not matter what happens to it at that point. You're supposed to eat it, but I don't think Mr. Farmer is really going to care if you shove that corn cob up your ass or burn it. He just wants the money. What we do with our own food is our problem. (Personally, I waste very little food. It hurts me to go into the freezer to throw away anything spoiled. :/)

Now with these alternative fuels on the rise, we have Mr. Farmer looking in another direction. He's got to markets two choose from. Either distribute to those food distributors he's been giving to for years, or convert his farms to grow crops for the alternative fuels. Obviously the alternative fuel industry is going to be offering quite a bit of money to get these farmers to latch on. When that happens, we'll have less farms sending food to the food distributors and prices will sky rocket. At that point, we either quit it with this alternative fuel idea or we rely on food imports. I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather be dependent of foreign oil rather than foreign food supply. Or, you know, we could just put our own oil reserves to use until a better power source is discovered... <<;

Ethanol is hardly the only alternative to oil. How about solar, wind, and water power, all of which can also charge an electric car? Any drawbacks there? (aside from "omigaw i dont want those giant ugly turbines in MY backyard")

Also, decent electric cars have been available for a while now. It's just going to take a monumental amount of effort to squash that stupid "HUGE SUV = OMG AWESOME" mentality that Detroit has pounded into Americans' heads. The vast majority of people do not need something that big!

Funny thing, that. We depend on foreign oil for our domestic food supply. Petroleum based processing for fertilizer, gasoline to get the produce to market. Plastic to preserve our foods. Perhaps you've noticed that when gas prices skyrocket, food prices go up also? And no, that's not entirely due to biofuels taking a chunk out of the market; they didn't even exist in 1973, and the prices still went crazy.

Quite simply, oil runs the world right now. That needs to stop, immediately; if it means that food goes up a bit and stabilizes, it's well worth not having the cost depend directly on the price of a substance that everyone knows is both finite and harmful.

This is also ignoring the fact that a large portion of the western world runs on surpluses of these things--over January and February, the US exported 3 million metric tons of wheat, and 6 million of corn. The UK tends to run million ton-surpluses, as well.

Ignoring tidal harnesses (which are still somewhat experimental, last I checked, but awesome nonetheless) hydro plants still tend to damage the ecosystem around them. Just consider the effect of transforming rivers into lakes.
