via Reuters:

PEORIA, Illinois (Reuters Life!) - A 13-year-old boy who police say was caught red-handed a block away was accused on Tuesday of robbing a bank in Peoria.

The unidentified boy was charged with felony armed robbery in juvenile court, accused of threatening a teller with a gun and demanding cash.

He was found hiding in a nearby garage about 30 minutes after Monday's robbery, stained red from a dye pack that had been placed in the bag of money.

"It's the youngest person I can remember," said Sheriff Michael McCoy, a four-decade veteran of the sheriff's office.

Prosecutors were considering whether to seek to have him tried as an adult and face up to 30 years in prison.

There's got to be more to this story... I'd like to know the kid's reasons for doing this. ;;

So calling my mother over this tonight. She works in the Peoria Bank building and I used to have an account through the very same...if it's the bank I'm thinking of (i.e. there is a parking garage near this building, likely the one they're referring to).

This ought to be drama-full.

I guess he's too young to know about the dye pack. Oh well, I guess he'll learn all the tricks of the trade once he's in jail.

30 years in prison? The kid's 13, for fuck's sake.

I can't argue against trying him as an adult - a lot of kids who are too young to be tried as adults here pull shit because they know they can get away with it.

Given the kid's age, jail (especially 30 years) is hardly the best option...you might as well just flush his future down the drain. He needs lots of help.

And I agree, there has to be more to this story. Where'd the kid get the gun?

Honestly I'd just leave it up to the intent.

But even then, 13 isn't exactly anywhere near being fully mature... I can't agree with a 30-year punishment for a nonviolent bank robbery of all things.

Just in case it wasn't clear, I wasn't advocating sending this kid to prison, especially not for 30 years, actually just the opposite.
