I'm just messing around in Pokemon Emerald and wondering; is there any way to change trainers around (trainer pics, pokemon, levels) in Emerald? The trainer editor in the EliteMap suite just displays gibberish and crashes.

Yeah, Elitemap is no longer supported or updated - Look into the AdvanceMap tools, they should still be being updated and would likely support Emerald proper.

For future reference, you should check out the Pokemon Community forums when it comes to Pokemon hacking. They've really made some big strides in hacking, especially of the Pokemon GBA games.

Of course, this is compared to back when I was working on back in the day, but still.

The Pokemon hacking community as a whole is filled with far too many n00bs and eliteists, however...in all honest, don't ever use anything from the Elite Map package unless you enjoy corrupting your hack down the line. The author of the EM program itself essentially had no idea what he was doing. interdpth released an updated trainer editing program which I believe would probably work well, his stuff usually does. Give that a try.

I can agree with you on the whole noobs and elitists thing.
...In any case, Craig341, you should try AdvanceMap by LU-HO, the newest version of which is always directly downloadable from http://amneu.no-ip.info/ and interdpth's updated PET and/or BattleEd which will work far better than the Trainer Editor included in the last EliteMap version.

Or do it by hand like I do its not terribly hard, and it actually lets you do more (since the trainers are all stored back to back, you won't be able to change around the roster structure too much without repointing, which if you do by hand makes things a lot easier)

Yeah... Most rom hackers with enough skill to get somewhere have no interest in Pokemon. I can't blame them, given the massive amount of n00bs.

Still disappointing though. In this context IMHO, the series' potential is underrated. I think there's room for quite entertaining hacks. More stable and consolidated tools might help. It's confusing having everything split into so many different programs.

That and the scripting system is only truely understood by a few people, and all the commands are not supported or broke in most of the scripting tools.

So, yeah.

It really is too bad though, ruby has TONS of free space to do a lot of stuff with.

That's because the localization team was horrible at managing space.

Red/Blue were bumped from their original Japanese 512KB, to 1MB.
Gold/Silver from 1MB to 2MB.
Ruby/Sapphire from 8MB to a whopping 16MB.

Or maybe it takes more space for a English script and GBA roms must be a certain size?

Considering that the Japanese Pokemon games use No/Next to no Kanji, probably.

English as a language takes a lot more whitespace than Japanese (even in full kana) really.

Oh yeah. I forgot about the lack of kanji... We're talking about Pokemon, not Phoenix Wright.

Try Un-lz Gba. It rocks awesomely with Pokémon games.
Adress should be somewhere near 300 with all those PKMN.

^ About that...

Friend of mine named Nintenlord made an app called GBA Graphics Editor (very generic, but hey, that's what it is!) that does what unLZ does...better.

Might want to look into that, instead.

There's a forum called Fire Emblem Universe that goes by Tactics Universe now that has a link to his utility.

It also has links to some of my things as well as tons of other stuff for hacking various Fire Emblem games.

I think the admin recently made it so you have to be logged in to view that forum as a move to get more activity.
