Okay, so, when I got the message that AVG was going to drop support of 7.5, I upgraded to the 8.5 version and was happy. However, after I went back to my dorm, my family calls and informs me that AVG is not working. I tell them to do all kinds of stuff, including run other web scans and reinstall it. No luck. Fast-forward to now, a full month later. I've tried tackling the problem myself, and have had just as much luck. I've completely and totally uninstalled it and reinstalled it, after installing Avast and scanning with it (found four trojans, had them deleted), and still the problem persists.

The most I can figure out about the actual problem is this: each and every time avgui.exe is run, whether by taskbar icon or command prompt, it instantly terminates itself, often too fast for the task manager to recognize it.

It's highly frustrating. Please, someone help.

Do you have any other antivirus/antispyware or firewall software installed? If so, try shutting them down completely and try running avgui.exe again.

If that doesn't work, or you don't have any of that software installed, just try shutting down all unnecessary programs and background processes. If it works, restart each program until you find the culprit.

Also, try shutting down the built in windows firewall, and if you are using Windows Vista, try shutting down UAC.

If neither of these work, start regmon and filemon (part of the sysinternal suite, I think there is a link in the diagnostic apps sticky) and set the filter to avgui and try launching avgui.exe again. Seeing what files and registry keys it accessed and/or failed to access before dieing might send you in the right direction.

If your using Vista, in addition to disabling UAC, make sure you're running as administrator. Find CMD in the start menu, right click it and choose 'Run as Administrator'. Any command issued in there will be launched with Admin privileges.

No, AVG was the only antivirus installed at the time, and this is on Windows XP.

We installed Avast and had it do a scan, and while we found four Trojans, none of them were affecting AVG and it still refuses to run. Also, our Windows firewall is always off.

I've been quite busy and am back away from home, but I'll try to get my brother to do the regmon/filemon thing. Those exist in Windows XP, correct?

Those are actually tools from SysInternals (which was acquired by MS a while back.) Regmon and Filemon.

I'd pull AVG entirely...honestly. You'd be better off with Avast! as your primary regardless. Of course, I'd hope you're not running two virus scanners at once...I can't tell by the information given because it sounds like that was the case. They'll conflict with one another.

Any routers/firewalls to be made mention outside of Windows Firewall? Microsoft's only goes so far when most malicious software's made to go right around it.

I didn't install Avast until I had repeatedly attempted to get AVG to work. I'm pretty sure the two programs potentially conflicting has nothing to do with it.

Our wireless router does have a firewall built into it, but it has been there since we had the older AVG. Still, I'll try it.

Also, I'll have my brother download the filemon/regimon things and test them out.

Well, I finally got home again for the weekend and tried out the process monitor program thing. Whole lot of NAME NOT FOUND results.

A majority of the RegOpenKey things that failed seem to be in the Windows NT folder in HKLM, whatever that is. Is that important?

It may be, but probably not, those are fairly common, the big red flag is a buffer overflow error.

If you set the the filter to avgui.exe, then try launching the program, you can click on the first item in the list, then use shift and the down arrow to select all the item, and then copy them to the clipboard with ctrl+c, so you can paste them here. You can do this with both filemon and regmon.

But, before doing that, try uninstalling and reinstalling one more time, but this time instead of using the standard uninstall tool, use the AVG remover tool, which can be found here: here. The standard uninstall program may be preserving whatever settings are screwing it up.

Ah, yes, I did see several buffer overflows. I'll have to try your suggestions and let you know what happens.
