More education =/= better education.

They can raise the standard of education without forcing more hours than a standard fulltime job on the kids.

Tell you what. When I have kids, I'll send them to school six days a week, all year long... if that fucker works six days a week, all year long.

Deal?

Oh, and there's also the teachers to consider. I'm sure they'd like some time away from the job.

Not to mention that they'd better increase teacher salaries if this shit were to happen. My mom's a teacher and is only making as much as she is (~40K) because she has a masters and experience.

Not to mention... if it was changed, you'd most likely end up with a huge fucking wave of dropouts.

School's strenuous enough. The only way people would actually get kids to work that much longer would be to pay them, and... yeah, that's not gonna happen.

"Go ahead and boo me," Duncan told about 400 middle and high school students at a public school in northeast Denver. "I fundamentally think that our school day is too short, our school week is too short and our school year is too short."

So that we can spend 5 days a week, 11 months out of the year reviewing the same things we learned last year. Oh wait, we already do that as it is.

He also applauded Denver's pay-for-performace teacher pay system

Okay, seriously, how did this clown get the position of Education Secretary?

Of course, this guy will probably also go "We won't increase salaries either!"

Then when all the teachers strike... whoops!

Well, apparently our Secretary of Education is taking some cues from this bozo... Starting this August, all schools in Puerto Rico will be on fron 8:00 AM to 4:00PM, thanks to extending all periods by ten minutes.

Of course, since I already have to put up with > 10-hour schedules and my little brother goes to private school, this doesn't affect us in the slightest.

Shiny new layout!

...

Well thank god I'm in college.

Seriously. You could maybe get away with extending school an hour, but really. How do you plan on fitting in extra curriculars, homework. Some kids already DO work for money, some volunteer.

It's like they think the brain is the only thing job companies are looking for
