It basically details how fat your ass is.

So basically another way to say a parent's not doing their job and a way to put the kid down if it's negative. All based on BMI (which is bogus anyways).

Too bad BMI is really flawed compared to, say, Fat Percentage.

Which is pretty flawed in itself.

I can't help but feel conflicted.

Part of me thinks their intentions are good, but the other part of me thinks they have no business doing such a thing.

Besides, wouldn't one expect the parent to know this kind of thing, anyway...?

Yea...every day they see the kid.

Which should be a resounding 'DUH!!!' to the government but of course they believe that parents aren't capable of this and thus must rely on the government to tell them their head from their ass...

When I was in Middle School (in MA, as it turns out) I always got perfect scores on the gym health test thingies our school gave, despite failing most of the actual physical tests, because I was hugely underweight and they gave the largest proportion to BMI... It was kind of funny to see the compiled report: "PUSH UPS- FAILED, PULL UPS- FAILED, VERDICT: You're doing great! Keep up your existing exercise regimen!"

I don't think we've ever really done testing. Most I remember is, in 9th grade, a weightlifting part of the class.

We categorized people by how much they improved or declined - I'm pretty sure I was in the highest improvement, despite being nowhere near the best when it actually came to lifting

We still have a weight room in the current school I'm in, which I try to use as much as I can.

Next to height, weight is the factor of your body most controlled by genes. (Source unknown, could probably find it if I cared)

I really, really have to disagree with this. People who are overweight are already getting bullied by people they are in school with 99% of the time. Why start piling this bullshit on students?

There are times where it isn't a genetic issue. I have an eleven-year-old cousin who's 140 pounds. I'm twenty, and I weigh that much. And this kid eats at McDonald's damn near every day on top of almost always eating something at home.

But... It won't do anything.

For those who can't help it, well... that speaks for itself, really.

And for those who do have themselves to blame, the parents have to have already seen it. Why would someone telling the parents that something is wrong do something when the parents have already seen that their kid is a fatass because of the junk food and lack of exercise?

That's why it's the second-most, not most.

Of course eating habits influence what happens.

But there are people who can eat a bigger-than-average diet and somehow not gain much weight, and people who can eat normal meals and still gain (or not lose) weight.

Eating McDonalds every day is going to have an impact, no doubt. But the amount (and intensity of such) varies wildly from person to person.

That wasn't me arguing with you, that was me leading into my next point. Or more accurately, my last point.

But yeah, I have somewhat similar eating habits and I'm only a little more than a stick figure.

For example, I eat entire pizzas and remain 121 lbs.

That's with a DS Phat in my back pocket.

And I'm 5'10".

Yeah. So if they gave a BMI report card on me... ...it'd be ' we are afraid of your child, who eats other people's lunches and runs around everywhere while not gaining weight.'

Mine hasn't yet.

But come on... "Billy has a solid B+ average, gets along with his friends and helps out after school... but he's 10 pounds overweight. YOU'VE FAILED HIM."

So now we'll have the No Fatass Left Behind policy next?
