This is a standard thing in many forums, I think the author of a thread should be allowed to edit its own thread's title. Sometimes (especially in news threads) the title becomes obsolete and needs renewing....

I don't see any harm this could cause... What do you think?

Or you could ask a mod/admin to change the title.

<_< I support the changing your own thread title idea.

Same. Seems more efficient to skip the middle man. As long as no one changes their titles for pure nonsense, the only problem I see is actually implementing it. It may be less than worth it to actually get it working. Then again, it may not be hard at all, I don't know.

The only problem with that logic is that the person will be free to change it as many times as they want at their leisure.

That could get quite annoying if someone consistently changes the title every 15 minutes to be an ass (and yes, people would do this).

It's not any different to the edit post function, though. People could also edit their posts repeatedly to annoy people.

Yeah, that's what I meant by nonsense. If it exists, someone will find a way to trash it.

Well, not exactly. The edit post function only edits their post. Nine times out of ten, no one would even notice it. However, if the whole thread title was changed, a fair bit more people would notice it and be annoyed.

This would require recoding and also potentially allow users to abuse the privilege.

It's a lot easier to have the mods/admins do it instead.

That makes sense in a small topic, but not when a topic has a lot of replies; not to mention, posts are often quoted (ahem) which preserves an original copy, as well as the "Edited by xxxxxxxx" line.

Posts are also not generally used as a main identifier to locate something. Changing a thread title can cause quite a bit of confusion, when you're looking for "Topic Title A" and finding nothing.

I might implement a compromise of an automated thread change request system, but don't count on it any time soon.

Xkeeper: As an example, have you really noticed a lot of problems with this on Bisqwit's site? I (Sticky) haven't found many changes in thread titles aside from "*UPDATE* FCEUX is better" or some such thing. I know your thread isn't TASVideos, but I don't see much harm coming from this change... aside from the occasional immature douche.

I can settle with an automated thread title change request system. But wouldn't it be easier to just grant the right to everyone and warn that misusing it counts as spam?

yes, until somebody who got banned and unbanned decides to go though and rename all his threads

it's not about the ease of the immediate but the amount of work I can remove later.

I don't think anyone immature enough to do such thing would have made a lot of important threads that he could mess up. In the case they have, couldn't they delete the first post of the thread as well? I don't think anyone has gone as low as to do such thing.

I am completely against this.

After all, how many threads do we have that might have a constantly updated title if this were to be implemented? For every one I can think of, a post to update it would easily suffice. If by any chance that a thread requires an altered title, it would more than likely be a very infrequent event, and a moderator could take care of it in no time.
Now, once we take into account the abuse potential, this will surely be very problematic. People have already abused post editing and post deleting, and we have no reason to believe they won't abuse this feature as well.

You could also just edit the first post. Makes much more sense.
