I don't get what people say about PS2s breaking, I have had my old bulk PS2 for 4 to 5 years and it still works flawlessly. Maybe the PAL ones were built better. :/
But yeah, at the moment I consider PS2 to be the best console by far, mostly because of the HUGE amount of GREAT games for it, not a lot of consoles can say that they have that.

Oh mine probably would've been working fine as well...
...except my sister dropped the PS2 because she had to yank the (at the time) wired controller forward when she was playing Final Fantasy X, causing an instant blue screen.
This damaged both my PS2 and my first FFX copy. I had to re-purchase it. My sister doesn't know how to take care of crap when it comes down to it (she's destroyed my copy of Final Fantasy VII, for instance). I'm glad I live on my own now so that only I am to blame for anything that happens (exceedingly rare, I take good care of my stuff).

Yea.
The minute the PS2 gets shifted to the curb, you can expect Sony to go all out in the PS3 pushing. It's exactly what happened last time with the PS1 and PS2.

Problem is that the system has to stop selling first.
I was thinking the death of the PS2 would be this year, but I'm guessing it'll get one more holiday season in. Pretty remarkable lifespan, actually.

| I've heard rumors that they'll stop making Ps2 games come this year, but the system itself should be going strong for at least 3 more years, if not more.

OK. Am i doing something wrong?
I recently got Disgaea 2 for my fat PS2. Playing it, loving it, wanting to squeeze all the goodness outta of it. So I'm looking over some stuff at gamefaqs when I find a youtube video
As soon as the video starts I notice something...it don't look like crap. In fact the video quality looks absolutely stunning. I don't know, maybe its just me, but the resolution looks higher than normal and the framerate looks high too, at least higher than im used to seeing on ps2 games.
The "enemy turn" and "player turn" and all the white text on screen looks super sharp and smoothly animated. When characters are moving, its so damn smooth looking. I really was taken aback, so I immediately go to my favorite gamestop, pick up some component ps2 cables(red, blue green) and hook it all up to my HDTV...
Maybe im stupid, maybe im blind, maybe im going crazy, yes my image looks better then before using RCA cables, but im not sure if my game looks as sharp as this damn you tube video.
Yes its all hooked up right. Yes the HD/non-HD toggle switch on the cables is set to HD. Yes the ps2 system menu says its connected vie component cables and 16:9 ratio.
I figure there's more stuff i can fiddle with, but just wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone has experience dealing with ps2 video quality connection cable framrate resolution stuff.
That damn youtube video is so silky smooth god damit, why cant my game look like that? |

I've not the slightest idea, to be honest. I couldn't even check the video anyway, since whenever I'm not on a slow connection I can't access them
Just sounds to me like a bit of a mental thing, really - Or maybe CRT televisions just display it clearer, I honestly have no idea what's going on.
Does anyone know if the AOL connection costs anything to play games online, anyway? I've been meaning to ask this for a long time now, but I kept forgetting...

I wonder if I can get my PS2 working again....
It would save me a lot of money, and I could get Disgaea wihout having to dish out 100 bucks for a new PS2...

Well, it's going through a digital box for capture and you're not really dealing with interpolation at that point...that can result in a much better picture.
Using component cables will yield the best results with a PS2, no questions asked. The question is how good your TV is at displaying it. If the image on your screen is really crap...then you might just have a bad TV.
The only other thing I can think of is it could be emulated and desktop recorded. PCSX2 is more than capable.
Props to using Aya's theme off TH9 though.

Thanks for the responses. I'm gonna go ahead and say they are emulating it perfectly on their monster desktop with monster vid card. Does PCSX2 support improved textures or filtering options like SNES emulators to make things look smoother than normal? I'm gonna go ahead and say yes... :p
Most likely the problem is me. I am never satisfied with my tech and I'm jealous of the kids with the newer, shinier toys. |

Holy jesus... Who needs TV anymore pshhh...
I took a quick look at PCSX2 just to see if it had a voodoo magic improved texture feature. 30 minutes later..
It indeed looks sweet as shit when emulated. Was a pain to get it all configured to play and sound right, but there it is in all its netherworldly glory, running from my actual PS2 disk.
Had no idea PS2 emulation was up to this. Freakin flawless
hmm actually the image looks a bit blurry here ..while playing it certainly doesn't look blurry

Meanwhile, I have some problems with Disgaea on PCSX2. It's kinda slow and and some graphics are glitchy.
Other than that no real problems for me.

What? Is that so hard to believe? Of course it's a gateway to bigger drugs better consoles on the market for Sony. Once you're impressed with one, most people can't help but grab the next in line.
Sure was the case for me at least.

| Not the case for me. Games are what matter, not the system. That's why I didn't get a Ps3 at first.

Yeah.
Games are definitely what decide which console you should get.
And now I'm at a point at which I can't decide between PS3 and 360.

I own two systems -- a fat 35000 system which I bought in August 2001, and a Japanese smaller system for all of my Japanese games. As far as the fat one, the CD drawer gets stuck somewhat when it gets halfway open and it won't play the blue disks unless you lay it on its side. I accidentally broke the one end of the adapter (the other end going into the television) when I sat on it (it broke off the connection to the PS2 and it got bent), but luckily it still works.

PS2 is not dead yet.
It'll have games coming out for this fiscal year (upwards of April 2010) for Capcom.
