So as an April Fools joke, a user over on VGMaps.com named JonLeung "ripped" maps for the supposed Metroid Dread and submitted them. Take a look if you want, I found them pretty well done:

Only problem I have with them is that they don't exactly look too great to play. It's a lot of small rooms with common-tile block formations in the way. Still though, it's pretty impressive and those boss sprites are really neat. Plus if you read some of the item descriptions, you see that he's included Scan Visor and DS touch screen capabilities for items like Seeker Missiles and Plasma Beam.

Just a cool little thing I thought I'd share.

I guess since VGMaps only accepts maps of real games or something, for them to have accepted this some probably believed that Dread was real. And M2K2 did a nice job fooling around with "playing the game" and asking questions on how to get places in it.

April Fools or not, it's still pretty damn impressive.

Still an insane amount of work for a joke.

Someone should really try to follow up on it with a SM hack, at least most of the mapping's done.

If you read the article on how he made it, he said how he edited the Fusion ship to remove the clunky extra parts to make it more like the original. Looking at the original sprites, it doesn't look that improbable that your two edits would end up very similar. However, if you'll notice, the underside of the nose of the ship is different. While yours is edited to be different, his is unchanged from the original.
