Trying to shrink my Win98 partition to install Damn Small Linux on the computer as well.

I tried using The Partition Resizer but I could only end up shaving off 157MB.

And, uh. Don't suggest Gparted. It doesn't fucking work with 28MB of RAM. :|

We weren't even testing for that.

I'd suggest using a hex editor to resize the partition. FAT32 is easy enough to figure out (no difficulties at all).

I honestly do not trust myself to do this. Knowing me, I'd break it somehow...

I'm defragging with different options. There's lots of scattered data at the end of the drive...

The problem is also my connection. I can't quite download it unless it's a small file, or I can somehow stumble across a free wi-fi connection somewhere.

Still can't resize after another defrag...

...And the culprit is a SINGLE UNMOVABLE BLOCK at the end of the drive. Fuck.

I would suggest defragmenting using a third party app from BartPE, but I'm not sure your computer would meet the minimum specs.

Another option is to physically remove the drive from the computer and connect it to a Windows XP/2000/2003 computer, either through a USB adapter (or enclosure), or directly to the motherboard with an IDE cable, then use that operating system's defrag program. If it isn't able to do a better job, it atleast gives you a report of the files it wasn't able to defragment, so you can simple move those files off the drive until you've finished resizing the partition.

I grabbed Vopt, and it said the file was "C:\.".

I gave up there and just tossed DSL onto the drive as it was. 64MB swap partition, 64MB partition to frugal install, and 32MB for MyDSL extensions.

Things are already running much better. And I can write to a FAT32 partition, so... things are good.

Just use a sledgehammer.

I'm surprised you've not found the ability to get a semi-decent system yet with all the hell this one's been giving you OVER YEARS!

I'm on a decent system. I just wanted to breathe a bit of life into that one, as well.

It can even dial via modem, it just... can't connect to AOL, since they're a bunch of fucking idiots who require you to use their clients. :/ AOL Dialer is good, but that won't quite work under Linux.

Are you sure it'd work on such an old system? I'm DEFINITELY willing to give it a shot, but I've actually never experimented with it before (nor do I know if it'd work, as I said.).

There's PengAOL, but... I'm not quite sure how to compile it for DSL.

Wine doesn't really add much to the system requirements of a program, since it doesn't emulate the hardware.

This is the Wine appdb listing for AOL:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=80

AOL 5.0 is listed a "Platinum" so it should work the same as it does under Windows.

Wine's a bit heavy on that comp. Fills /home/ (I think it was) and the swap space.

Thus, waol.exe won't start - it just locks the comp up tight. Is there perhaps a way to get PengAOL installed on such a system?

Why not just shared the connection with whatever computer you're using now? It seems easier then disconnecting one to use the other.

I actually haven't the slightest idea how to do that.

I think all the other computer has is a modem (phone jacks) anyway. If there's something else, I certainly didn't see it.

If you have or can get a cable with a female serial connection on both ends, you should be able to set up a direct cable connection host on the Windows machine, and "dial out" to it from the Linux machine (it should treat the cable itself like a modem since it's connected to the COM port). I've never done it between a Linux and Windows, but it work pretty good between Windows machines.

Not quite sure about that either. Is it just a standard phone cord?

Also, I got Peng compiled. I just get a Segmentation fault when trying to connect. This is... pretty much the final hurdle before I either get online or just give up.

The serial port on your computer is the one that looks similar to where you plug your monitor in, only with pins instead of holes. They used to be referred to as COM ports, and was the standard connector for external modems. So now, even when a modem is internal modem is plug into a PCI the system creates a virtual COM port to connect to it through and dial out.

So if a cable connects two computers through their serial ports, the computers will treat the cable like a modem (called a null modem) and allow you to "dial out" to the other computer.

Alternatively, if you have a USB cable with male A connectors on both ends, you can install a virtual COM port driver on both computers, and you'll be able to dial out to the other computer through that.

I think a segmentation fault is another way of saying protection fault. Basically the program is trying to access memory it isn't allowed to. I'm not really sure what would cause it, but it may be that you're running out of swap space. All I can really suggest is to try building an earlier version and see if it works any better.

I'm still not 100% sure about dialing out, though. Ah well, I'll look for said cable sometime, ands ee if I could get it to work.

In other news, Peng is working! I'm posting this very message from my DSL install. I'm stuck using Dillo (which sucks, honestly) due to the low RAM, but, hey. This could even be a step to switching to Ubuntu before I get a new connection...
