So, *sigh*, my lappy is failing me (as usual).
Why does everything start breaking when the warranty is up?
Here's what's happening:
I put a CD (or DVD for that matter) in. It wants me to 'format this blank disc'. That'd be fine and all, if the disc we're in fact, blank. Any disc (even tested in other computers) does this. It says there's stuff on it (i.e. free space), but ....ARGH... take a screeny:

Screen-cap

Help?

It could also me caused by your autorun setting. Change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\cdrom from 0 to 1.

If it already is one, or that just doesn't fix it, try uninstalling your CD-ROM from the device manager, then do a scan for hardware changes to reinstall it.

I don't have access to it atm, but this looks like it just enables autorun. It autoruns just fine, it just says the disc is blank.

Does it do this with similar discs (i.e. discs burnt with free space on them)?

I wouldn't really know a solution to this one because it's a) Vista and b) I tend to use third-party burning. Free-wise, CDBurnerXP is the only thing I can think of.

I'm not sure if that's software or hardware failure, though. I would think that'd be something in a detect for the drive but maybe not. :\

Hm. I just remembered that I recently installed (and used) Infra Recorder. I searched for known problems with it, but couldn't find any. Just to be safe, I uninstalled it. Still doesn't work though. Lemme try a reboot now.

Well, still no luck. I decided while it was rebooting that it would be worth my while to try a bootable cd. Hello Ubuntu 8.10. It booted and ran fine, so I think it's safe to assume it's hardware and not software. I guess I'll reinstall drivers now, even though it says they're fine.

Yes, there's a bug in Vista that can cause this problem when autorun is disabled.

You mean that the other way around, right?

Uninstalled the driver and rebooted. Worked like a charm. Still noisy as all get out, but this lappy has never really been quiet, and I can't fix that.
