The cool part about the North American SNES was that it didn't have a lockout chip for Japanese games. All you have to do it cut out the tabs inside the SNES cartridge slot so that the Super Famicom game will fit in or you can use a Super Famicom converter or Game Genie to use the cartridge without having to put it into the slot.

..no kidding? I wasn't aware that the CIC lockout didn't effect Japanese/American carts. Thanks

It was always well-known; hell, game magazines would tell you how to circumvent that problem so that you could play imports.

Then you also had the first wave of NES games which had a Famicom converter built in if you took apart the cartridge...

You wouldn't believe how many carts I've opened up looking for that. I have at least 10 really old NES games (ones with screws on the back instead of the security bit) and none of them had it .

Luckily my unofficial Famicom converter is working well at the moment

After seeing this I feel like playing it again. I don't think I still have the game though, but I did have it as a kid and I remember that I loved this game!

I'd actually care about the famicom converter if I had any games for it...

I bet I have one game with it in there, though...

I should point this one out. Fails linked me to this a few days ago: Puyo Puyo Sun PC, translated.

It's abandonware...but if you've never taken the time to figure out what Puyo Puyo is or even played Kirby's Avalanche back in the day...you might want to grab that. It's about 300MB.

Well I'll have to grab that.
I recently set up my Wii with the latest SNES emulator.
Complete with filters, it looks just like I had the real thing hooked up (except I was playing Brutal Mario World... )

I never understood the attraction to Brutal Mario, honestly.

Sure, it's got some insane coding jobs, but not reall much else.

Well, if you had a lot of old games, you could see if any of them felt a little heavier... that one would usually have the converter.

I think they were only in Nintendo-made games...

Look for these games:

1942

Clu Clu Land
Donkey Kong Jr.
Duck Hunt
Elevator Action
Excitebike
Golf
Gumshoe
Gyromite
Hogan's Alley
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Pinball
Raid on Bungeling Bay
Rygar
Soccer
Stack Up
Tennis
Urban Champion
Wizards and Warriors
Wrecking Crew

Though these aren't guaranteed to have the converter in them. More here.

(And if I was feeling like a dick, I would have just linked this )

...How the hell would Wizards and Warriors have the converter? I mean, it came out later than most of those games and it was Rare/Acclaim...

I actually own 1942 and Pinball.

I'll have to look inside them later.

Oh god I am downloading that right away.
I didn't even know there was a PC version though, thought it was just Saturn and PSX...

It's more or less a reincarnation of the Saturn version.

There was N64, Arcade, PSX, PC and Saturn for Sun (Puyo Puyo 3).

There was a game for that series that wasn't Puyo that had a dark Arle in it on Windows 95. I've never found it.

I've always liked the SNES the best of any system, probably just because all of my favorite games are played on it.
