My university requires that freshmen (and now sophomores, if I hear right) live in dorms.

Another piece of advice, if you can afford it, is to buy a house instead of renting an apartment. Houses don't tend to decrease in value, so while you're out a bunch of money when you start out, you can sell the place when you leave and get your money back. You end up paying next to nothing, instead of four year's worth of rent.

If you can get it, I personally recommend living at home for your Uni days.

But of course, I live in a country where living in dorms is purely the domain of international students and country kids attending Uni.

I stayed my first year in the dorms on campus. Though the two suitemates were slobs and jerks, my roommates were quite nice and I loved being only less than ten minutes away from anywhere on campus. Now I stay in apartments just off campus. I still call them dorms, though.

I'd be living at home if home wasn't 100 miles away.

Actually, living in a dorm is a great way to make friends your first year on campus. After you've accomplished that, get the fuck out the year after.

I have way too much work to live off the dorm, not to mention traveling would be a pain in the winter and spring. (Rain/Snow arg)

I am an experienced college student BECAUSE I chose not to live in dorms.

I don't get what's so great about them...it's hard enough taking care of myself in my own apartment at times.

dorms are hit or miss for some people--but it also depends on your own personality and the people around you. I have my own apartment in a complex with three other people and everyone around me is great. Yes, I have heard of nightmarish stories of those living in dorms. Perhaps, in some ways, living in a dorm is a crapshoot because you really do not know what kind of personalities you will get. If you are concerned with living with weirdos at first, then perhaps getting your own place initially is better. Once you make some friends, then you can move in together and save a little more money that way.

I stayed in the dorms at a college for two nights a couple weeks ago. Didn't really care for it. But afaik I have relatives who may be willing to put me up everywhere I've been looking. ____________________

Well, I'd think that if someone was stealing root beer it would be the LEAST of your problems.

I live in what I would call a dorm, and I don't mind it that much.

What you call room mates, I'd call kitchen mates. I suppose you don't actually share your room with them...

Of course, we do have to share kitchen and bathroom facilities. It's worked pretty fine, except for just lately when someone that belongs to another kitchen started stealing our food. So now we lock the kitchen door whenever we're not around, and the problem is solved. It's kind of a hassle to have to unlock and lock the door when you want something in the kitchen, though.

Also, where I live is really cheap, and it's only a 20 - 25 minute walk away from campus. Or, well, this university doesn't really have a well defined campus, it's spread all over the downtown area of this town; but atleast my institute (geophysical) is a 25 minute walk away. If I were to study law, it would be more practical to go by bus, as it is the one farthest away from where I live.

And of course, there's a pub in the basement, where I work from time to time (four times a year... for free, of course, but not without special benefits.) I like it, it's lots of fun. So I don't really want to move just yet..
