Owch.

I'm not exactly sure WHY they would want to do something like eradicate English-only versions of games but...

Well, from what I read in the other links...it basically seems to boil down to 'French preservation by Quebec' and 'see bill 101'.

I guess we're not the only country run by idgamanents.

Quebec has, for quite some time, been the retarded portion of Canada; they've been trying to break off and become independant for however long (did that ever even succeed?).

So, yeah, you could say that.

No, but it's getting to the point where the rest of us don't even care anymore.

This makes no sense though, since most games come in English with a setting to turn on Japanese in North America. They're going to have to drive into Ontario to buy their games, and the economy is going to tank even more over there.

Terrible idea really.

No, because Canada is full of bleeding-heart fuckwits like those idiots who repealed the death penalty and also every. single. fucking. canadian. judge. (See: Gang Wars in Vancouver)

In other words, Quebec is run by your run-of-the-mill Canadian Politician.

...That's freaking stupid.

The guys who are voting for this can go fuck themselves. Having a french/english booklet is already enough to delay a game.

Who the hell do they think we are? Australia*?

Hey! I take offense in that (considering North America is retarded as a whole, already)

Obviously, if you're talking about laws, that's another story.

Probably not. It's not something that'd delay it that much.

Kotaku updated the article and this was something I've known about for a while:

"While the Star article makes it seem as though this is banning video English language video games, the new law does not prohibit the sale of English-only video games. Rather, it asks of the publisher to make a french version available if and when it exists, which means Quebec's gamers will still be able to purchase the English version and do so at the same time as everyone else in the world."

In other words, if a company never localizes a game in French, you can sell the English version because it's the only one available. But if there's a French version, then either the developer needs to make a *separate* English/French language swap version for Quebec *or* we're going to end up with a Multi-5 PAL port of a game.

And all the publisher needs to do is make a version available - doesn't mean stores are going to sell it.

Yea, but I've also read a few of the comments that say the French localizations suck donkey balls most times.

Well duh, that's why almost nobody will buy them. (Most games here by known publishers come with French booklets... I read a post somewhere saying NIS even did it with Rhapsody DS and Disgaea DS which surprises me.)

Odds are that even if those versions are made available, publishers would rather release an English/French game instead of straight French. Might as well make back the money.

Reading the update, it looks like it's more media sensationalism. What a surprise!

Well, when you report it as "all games must be in French" then yes.

Like I said, I don't think there'll be a huge problem in the end. I doubt there'll be a high demand for FFXIII in French, for example. Some people will buy it but the majority just want to play the game.
