I'd check your systems out for updates and other such if you've not done so already.

We're looking at about 5-10 million infected already on this variant alone. We're basically looking at another one like BLASTER.

EDIT: Also known as W32/Downadup.C. I've had this here at work.

Makes me wonder how it got so widespread in the first place? What is it means of replication? I think my windows box will be fine because it is behind a linux gateway and I rarely go through shady sites.

But yeah, I do agree it has some experts fearing a repeat of blaster

Coming from me, who has to deal with 'standardized security' here, I would say this has a lot of computers by the balls that may not know about it.

This is basically the best I can do to make sure people actually update their systems with Windows Update, keep their virus scanners up to date and do thorough scans if at all possible. Any issues with those and I'd be suspicious.

I'm about due for a reinstall anyways... I do that every now and then just to keep things clean, and this is a good reason to do it. Now just to get a GRUB boot disc so I can get my OS menu back when I'm done...

All I'm going to say is that at work, we're expected to get higher case volume starting in April.

Based on what I've read about this worm, I think I know why... :\

More stuff

I'm not really scared, but just in case, I'll keep my computer off while I'm sleeping...

Didn't Microsoft patch last year the security flaw the virus used to attack Windows?

My dad thinks that downloading a patch from this page will help protect our computers.

I honestly don't think that this is going to be as big of a deal as people think though .

I'm more worried about when.

Midnight in which timezone? It's still 10 here when EST midnight hits

I agree. I bet that if many people applied the updates Microsoft issued, this virus won't really do much...

I've been doing everything I can to make sure my laptop and home computer are safe, because I'm pretty sure my brother has picked up dozens of viruses during my away time.

I'm quite surprised at the number of people who ignorantly believe that just because it activates on April Fools' Day, it's fake. I've seen tons of posts like "oh I stopped reading the article when I saw April 1st, it's such a hoax" and "this is fake it says April 1st so it must be a joke".

Yeah, it was actually pretty smart of the creator(s) of Conficker to program it to activate on April Fool's, deliberately to fool people into thinking it will be a hoax.

Computer security researchers who have examined a recent version of the program, called Conficker C, have said it was set to try to download commands from a server at an unknown Internet location on Wednesday. There was no certainty about the intent of the program, which could be used to send e-mail spam, distribute malicious software or generate a potentially devastating “denial of service” attack on Web sites or networks.

Well, I guess it was right on schedule... Hopefully everybody here patched their PCs and has an anti-virus running just in case.

Most likely. It's 11:10 here, and the local news station is going crazy over it. We'll see what happens.

Keep in mind that there is now Conficker D. Every variant updates to whatever the newest version is...it could be something for that...who knows.

I won't know the payload until I get in to work tomorrow.
