I have trouble doing this in C++, and someone manages to do this in a video game with the equivalent of sticks and stones. Absolutely amazing.

The amount of stuff you can do in LBP has surprised the hell out of me since I've seen the custom vids come out.

But it's encouraged...if your downloads get a certain amount, you get trophies for it. That could be most of the reason you're seeing a lot of these innovative videos on YT.

It's not surprising that they got four awards at GDC for the game.

Haha, wow. That's actually a pretty cool idea, considering. Has that actually been used in a game before?

To my knowledge, no.

That's not to say this will be the last it happens in. Just wait for custom maps/mods/etc. are used in FPSes for starters...

The problem being that these days, an entire 3D level can take forever to create, as opposed to the relatively simple format of, say, Doom.

Wolfenstein's hitting iPhone and now 360 and PS3.

It's only a matter of time for DOOM to make its way forth.

Some of the LBP stuff really impresses me... I mean, people even went through the hassle of recreating Contra in LBP. Insane.

I really like the idea of trophies for downloads since it does encourage quality contributions; I'd rather have a glut of above-average or good material. Better than wading through a bunch of crap to find the good stuff.

Not only downloads.. but your level has to be "hearted" that is ranked as a favourite by another user. Just plays isn't enough.

I LBP one of my fave games ever.

Sauerbraten's got a rather good editor built in. Makes a nice timesink, too. Except adding in all the little details for a map *does* take a while. Simpler maps don't take all that long.

I'm sad to see LBP as a PS3 exclusive. Looks like you can do all sorts of awesome stuff with it...

Oh man. I was really excited, then you said 6x6 grid and it turned kinda eh. The technical accomplishment is still pretty cool (even though I'm sure you can build a turing machine in Little Big Planet), but it needs to be larger to really get the game of life across.

On the other hand... I've been playing a little bit of Sauerbraten lately. I can't wait to have enough free time to start actually screwing around with that. Besides just making maps, it looks like I could rig up procedural levels in that system without too much hassle. FPS/Roguelike, anyone?
