I was incredibly lucky.

I never get view milestones.

If you're wondering I've opened at least 20 tabs more since then.

I have 27 tabs open, and that's rather low for me.

As you read a page, you open every interesting link in a new tab. Then you close the original tab. Posting on JUL, that's maybe a dozen tabs, but it's the fastest way to browse. And those tabs go away quick.

The problem lies in when you've opened a page and you don't really know what to do with it or you don't feel like getting around with it. Some tabs stick around for ages.

I usually keep gmail and imageshack open, then have a couple tabs for random browsing and link clicking from IRC.

You think that's too many? My mom has 30 open for right now, left open overnight...sometimes it can be as many as 50. And in Firefox to boot. Do you know how high the Memory gets from having fifty tabs open in Firefox from one window(hers) and ten more in another(mine)? That's why I went to Opera, saves a lot of memory it looks like. Current tab count is 14, ~7 of those are about to go.

I love how this went from a thread about 7000000 views to tabs. I was thinking about just making another thread for tabs or maybe a poll. Somehow view 7000000 got pushed to the side.

I have who knows how many tabls open.

Opera has always been a lot more RAM-heavy for me... I wonder what some people do to their Firefox installs to skyrocket the RAM usage so high

...Maybe it's Flash, which I don't have installed under Firefox...

Firefox is inherently bloaty--a fresh run starts using 100,000KiB, and in a week, it will be up to about 250,000 KiB of continuously running

Mine's running 56,000 at the office. I think that figure is system dependent.

Windows XP, yep. 2.2GHz Intel dual-core running 1 GB of RAM at the office. Total Page File is at 2440MB.

I wanna say that it runs a certain percentage of some sort but I'm not sure what and I'm not sure if it's correct. I know that FF took up less on my old Pentium III that had less RAM. Wanna say it was 30,000 or so.

My tabs got to the point where I couldn't tell what they were anymore, and the little x to close them disappeared.

I killed Opera and started new.

That's why I turn off the little x next to the tabs. It helps overcrowding, and it's easier to have one single x button than multiple. The obvious disadvantage is that I often accidentally close Opera when I still have 80 tabs open (and it reloads them all...)

I know from Opera (don't know if FF does the same) that memory consumption is proportional to total physical memory. That might explain it.

Hmm...I have a Quadcore with 4GiB of ram, but my lappy is Core2Duo with 2GiB of ram with the same consumption...weird

But yeah, as for tabs, I was sad how the gurus at Firefox moved the omnipotent closing tab button on to individual tabs in the change from 1.5 to 2. Makes me wonder, if there is a way to move it back?

I don't have any of the [x]s on, simply because I like my middle mouse button (or better, Close All But Active / rightclick-down-right) more.

As for tab reloading, I noticed that it actually seems to load all the pages from cache (at least, here), so it might not be that bad.

I personally don't care how much memory something is using as long as it has a reason and it's willing to give it up when I actually need it. Free RAM is wasted RAM, after all.

Yes it reloads the pages from cache. That doesn't change the fact it takes very long to do so. I try to at least close some tabs before it tries to load them to speed up the process.

Firefox has lately been a real pain in the ass on our home laptop... suddenly refusing to connect to internet, whereas Explorer works perfectly. Shutting it down, trying to restart it, only resulting in error "firefox is still running".

Bleh. Time to try Chrome.

Considering that the board gets between 15K to 20K views every day, I wouldn't be surprised if 8 million comes in about 6 weeks from now. Maybe 10 million by mid-summer?
