So I got the game when it first came out and for some reason I stopped playing near the end. I finally started to play it again yesterday and got through the tower and now I am at the very end of the game.

I've beaten Judge Gabranth, Vayne, Vayne Novus but I cannot beat the last boss, The Undying. And since there's no save points in this area, having to go back and fight the other 3 again is starting to get to me.

I've made two teams that I always use together:

Vaan lvl 54
Balthier lvl 57
Penelo lvl 56 (healer)

Fraan lvl 50 (part healer)
Basch lvl 51
Ashe lvl 51 (healer)

Anyone beat this game, and if so, any hints into killing the last boss would be fantastic.

I've started to lvl up my characters a bit more, hoping that might do the trick. I'm fighting in the Cerobi Steepe right now.

Basically it's a gambit loop that you can set up to just auto-kill things for you...

Oh and of course there's a monster (Negalmuur) that will spawn an infinite number of Ghasts for you to kill. Set up your gambits right and it's pretty much it a "fire and forget" strategy should you just want to get your level up. Yes I suppose you could call it an auto-leveling loophole as well. <<

Basically, Negalmuur spawns in the Stilshrine of Miram, Ward of the Sword-King. If he doesnt just clear the room and try again.

Then set your gambits as so... (they'll be in spoilers)

Get to a spot where you wont wander out of the room and just let your party do the dirty work. (That's what gamibts are for anyway... right?)

[did not care for XII in the slightest]

Trust me, he didn't. I've heard the rant before.

And I'd also question having such a game-breaking tactic in there as well.

I changed my gambits, Balthier & Penelo both leveled up and then I tried it again. Did a tad better I think, but still died. I think one of my problems is that my 2nd team is much lower than my main team. I need to get them closer to the lvl 60 range.

The game is practically screaming for self-automation.

*shrug* Really it's the same for every FF. If you cant kill the baddie you're too low a level

FINALLY beat the game. Highlest lvl was 59. Doubt I'll be playing this game again anytime soon.

Riketz once described this game to me as "Move the left analog stick to win" (because of gambits). Seriously, why would you add something like that?

I mean I can kind of understand the "AUTO" from ye olden games, but actually allowing you to automate half the game seems kind of absurd.

Perhaps they should've just made it play itself

Yea, it was pretty fast and easy to level up my characters once I messed around with the gambits.

Eh, it just took the tedium out of the grind really. It's what FF is infamous for anyhow.

Still need to finish it, got distracted by final year uni....

Ehh.. Gambits were meant as a means of automating basic commands so you don't have to rapidly order a unit to attack or cast a certain spell. I don't think it was intended for them to be used to play the game for you. (even if they can be used to do that, with the right setup.)

Besides, you can play the game completely without gambits. (And throughout much of the game, I did.) It just takes a lot longer to issue commands that way.

Most FF games will hold my attention from start to finish. This one (along with FF5) didn't do that to me. The gambits made it easier, but I don't think it was needed (nice try though). It doesn't take that long to attack then to use an item then magic the old fashion way.

I think the gambit idea is a good one: if you're not going to make the game require brainpower to play, why not let the player automate it?

I'd like to see something like Ogre Battle where you control all the parties with that sort of automation.
