A few days ago I was bored so I decided to play some NES games with the Game Genie for amusement. I played SMB1 and SMB3 using all sorts of codes that caused extremely strange glitches. It was fun at first but when I went to play other games without using Game Genie they hardly ever work. Before this happened it may have taken 10 tries max to get a game to work. Now when I try to play games the title screens sometimes appear but they always have garbled graphics.

I'm pretty sure that what happened wasn't just a coincidence so the moral of the story is: Don't use Extremely weird Game Genie codes on NES games unless you're using an emulator.

Sounds like a short circuit burnt a part of the motherboard to me, actually.

The codes should only happen in software... unless you overclocked it somehow? Or bent pins?

Thats possible. To anyone who has used the NES Game Genie before they would probably know that it's not that easy to get it into your NES. I possibly bent one of the pins when I tried to put it in

I highly doubt a code can hurt an NES. It's probably just the connector. The only ways I know of for software to damage hardware are by corrupting firmware or through poorly-designed hardware (such as moving parts that can be made to smash into things nearby). AFAIK the NES has neither of these. (It certainly doesn't have firmware.)

This is a common problem with NESes, especially if you were trying to play it... the way the Game Genie works isn't always so kind either (it tended to grind its way in) and the connectors tend to seperate over long periods of time.

You can try opening it up and looking to see if the connector really is fouled up and try clamping it together/fixing it manually, but I think some places offer a repair kit for those things.

Yeah, Game Genies can screw up NES systems. :\

Worst-case scenario is you just always play with the Genie and don't put any codes in. Looks funny but voila.

(Or buy one of those NES knockoffs. Or go with emulation.)

There's at least one game - Legendary Wings - that I found would behave odd (glitchy sound) when you used a Game Genie even without any codes. (The game is pretty lame, though. )

Strange, I never noticed any of my games glitching with a Game Genie inserted.

Dunno why it would be Legendary Wings, doesn't that use one of the common mappers?

Megaman 2 is also a good example of that.

After trying for over 15 minutes I finally got 1943 to work. I'm happy to see my NES still works a bit

The Game Genie fools with one of the sound registers (to produce that weird style of sound), and doesn't put it back to normal... so games that don't use it at all will get a bit screwed up

Hm, any decent patching system like the Game Genie should put things back exactly how they used to be when it's done to avoid detection/weirdness, but any decent game shouldn't rely on the hardware being in a certain state when it starts up. Failure all around!
