Simplicity v1.1
This is more of a story + ad more or less but it goes into a few things.

Picked up an iPod Video 30GB Black the other day...at a pawn shop no less (I was there just looking around since I was in the area) and I found the price to be 45 dollars. It said non-working. Shrugged my shoulders, bought it, brought it home and sure enough the thing didn't start.

Well, gee that's because there was no firmware in it.

Fixed that, got an iPod. Just goes to show you how dumb my particular community is.

Took a look at getting RockBox on it, which at the time I didn't know such a thing existed, but it replaced the firmware that I had with this one. Furthermore, my MP3 playing iPod now just got the ability to play OGGs and a bunch of other things.

In short, I can play DOOM on my iPod now among other things. I just got this non-working cheapass thing (looks brand new) up to speed and quintupled its productivity in a night. It's at home right now getting all my music on it, whether MP3, OGG, or whatever. I mean seriously...what the heck? How did I not know of something like this? I might've got an iPod sooner.

What formats does this support anyway? I can't seem to find a list on their website.

Judging from the fact he mentions that it now plays .OGG files, I'm guess iPods under normal circumstances play only MP3s. Maybe FLAC but I dunno much about music formats anyway.

Doesn't seem like anyone I know who has an iPod uses any format other than MP3s anyway.

It's a good thing I looked at it...this thing supports NSFs and SPCs.

Straight out of the ZIP it supports A52, AAC, ADX, AIFF, ALAC, APE, MP3, MPC, NSF, shorten (?), SID, SPC, SPEEX, Vorbis (OGG), WAV, WMA.

Daaaaag yo.

Like all things, using normal firmwares isn't that great.
(I still don't like iPods, but I guess that if it became good, and since you haven't paid alot for it, can't really complain.)

(and using non-official firmwares is awesome. see: PSP)

I tried to download RockBox to my SanDisk e-series thing, but the loader didn't recognize my player for some reason...

Which is a shame, because it looks awesome.

Yeah, iPods are way too expensive for what I want. Might as well just bring my lappy everywhere if I wanted to listen to music on the go.

I had pretty much given up support for rockbox on my Creative Zen Vision:M until Ranko's link had me curious as to whether or not they have made any breakthroughs, and from what I can see, it seems there is hope. I will rejoice the day this gets released for my Vision:M, until then, I'll have to live with the crapware that currently resides on it.

Nintendo DS + hacked firmware + M3 Perfect + several CompactFlash cards = yummy

Can your iPod play NES ROMs? Uh huh, didn't think so.

GP32, and GP2X can do all of that, plus run several emulators.

The only problem is that I don't really use mine that much anymore.

But for the price he got it for, even I wouldn't complain and an iPod would be the last MP3 player I'd get.

You mean one 4GB Compact Flash card. (Also, I have GBAMP, but I want M3 Perfect. I just don't have any money right now. )

What program do you use to play music though? I have trouble with all the ones I know of. Moonshell freezes almost every time it tries to advance to the next song if one is MP3 and the other is OGG; DSOrganize just freezes randomly while playing sound; LMP has an annoying interface and poor OGG support (occasionally playing at the wrong bitrate, freezing up, lagging etc) and I can't get playlists to work.

Also I HATE HATE HATE the DS's volume control. >:[

I don't know why, but mine doesn't start at all anymore, I get a fuzzy screen and then it shuts off. And I just placed fully charged (recharagable) batteries in it too..

Just got done testing it after dealing with power problems with this POS. Seems that it runs just fine but it's limited in what it can do. The NSF plugin is a knock-off of the NotSoFatso source code but I'm not exactly sure how to switch tracks in play aside from waiting for NSFEs to go through their timer and fadeout and do it themselves.

But it plays!
