Apparently a rather bad economic future...

Quality RPG producer Atlus, best known for the blockbuster Megami Tensei series, is in dire financial straits, and has forecast huge losses as a result of worsening financial performance and the disposal of one of its failing lines of business.

For the accounting period ending in July, 2009, the company has revised its forecast performance from a profit of ¥100 million ($1 million) to a loss of ¥2.400 billion ($24 million). Their last reported results were a profit of ¥500 million.

Their stock has been falling precipitously as a result.

Looking at their financial reports, much of the loss appears to be of an extraordinary nature, stemming from their withdrawal from arcade-type games, where by their own admission things had not been going well.

Overall sales forecasts are also down however, with a reduction to ¥20 billion, an 11% reduction. Their estimate of pre-tax operating profit has been slashed 72%, to a mere ¥400 million.

No I certainly don't like hearing this...

I'm telling you... Atlus needs to get their act together and make a Crusader of Centy 2. It'll sell like hotcakes laced with crack!

Disappointed, yes. But can't say I'm surprised.

They've clearly spent too much on licensing niche IPs. Need to branch out to series with more widespread appeal. Even if it goes against what the brand is so famous far.

But that's not what ATLUS is about.

That's not what any of the franchises that were worth their mettle that have gone under in similar fashion were about. Hell, look at Working Designs...and they were just localizers.

I think it's more in tune with the way the economy is rolling right now. Midway filed bankruptcy, no one's really buying anything new in terms of ANYTHING like we used to because we're all keeping our money under our mattresses now...so reports like this aren't too surprising, yes, but not for the reasons of 'oh they just need to be like everyone else'.

The reasons I LOVE ATLUS are because they AREN'T like everyone else...I don't want another company that does everything that everyone and their brother has heard of for a game because it gets old...I want something new and innovative and something that, generally, gives me a good time in terms of the amount of hours I've sunk into it that I've not run into before and ATLUS generally performs in this area in almost every game, console or arcade, that I've run across.
