Your preferred portable multi-im client.
VLC (I would say CCCP but VLC is more portable).
Some emulators/roms for fun.

And umm... Firefox portable maybe?

A bigger thumbdrive.

A 4 gig is less than 10 bucks.

Then get Portable Apps. The usual suites for all the ones that are worth it would take out most of that half-gig drive and I would worry about system space, performance and actual use of the drive after that.

I usually keep Ad-Aware on mine since it means I can actually do something with all the "fix my computer" requests I get.

Your favorite tiny Linux distro could also be a good choice, if you run into something that's horribly over-secured.

You can easily fit any Touhou game on there if you set it to use midi and delete thbgm.dat...
And still have room!

I'd really just suggest anything you frequently use that is small enough to fit. IRC clients and the like.

If possible, put some good text editor on there too. You don't know how annoying it is to have to work with Notepad if you're not used to it anymore.

Basically what others say:

- Mutli-purpose IM client
- ... and IRC, if you don't have it covered under the above
- A decent text editor
- An FTP client
- Common fixes to computer problems (AdAware, HijackThis, etc)
- Games (pick your favorite ROMs)
- A browser of your choice

Basically, all the stuff you normally use anyway.

File browser, portable antivirus... file compressor... just the basics, pretty much.

good to also clean up any computers you might get on which are hostile.

A portable Linux distro would be my choice, anyway. If you stay off the hard disks completely, it would be incredibly tough to get your drive contaminated, as I've heard a few horror stories about that...

If you decide to go this route, I'd suggest Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux. I'd recommend DSL over Puppy, but if worst comes to worst... (DSL's easy to extend too, even if you don't know your way around Linux well)

If you go for just apps, I'd throw things that've already been mentioned. I already have Firefox on my USB drive. Notepad++ would be a nice fit for a replacement text editor, however... I run a "standard" build of Firefox just fine, though I'd guess the portable builds save settings to the drive...
