Me too. A while. Too long.

Nothing too fancy. A fairly inexpensive Dell laptop.

I'll try not to...

Laptops are great for posting.

And damn near everything else, really.

Anybody got an idea what I can do with an ancient original-model Sony Viao laptop?

I need to get a new laptop. Both of mine need to be plugged in in order to work.

Laptops are limited in mod-ability from the get-go.

This I do not like. I require a computer to be able to hover six inches off the ground at my request. A laptop is, thus, incapable of my bidding.

Seriously, laptops suck for upgrading peripherals.

Sukasa - Send Private Message

Generally it's just the cheaper laptops that you can't upgrade much

I know this one has a few upgradable modules in it... HD, RAM, Wireless, Bluetooth, second HD bay, etc.

Plus, when the power goes off for a minute or two you don't lose all your work

Install gentoo and run a small web server out of it. Or, install gentoo and use it as a proxy between your windows machine and the internet. Outgoing port filtering is awesome.

Oh, Hi! NsNick! =D

1) I am far toooo lazy to worry about upgrading-- I rode my last computer for 5 years into the ground without doing shit.
2) So far, I am very pleasantly surprised by the battery life.

Don't care for laptops so much... :/ Not so upgradable.
Portable as hell though, that's a plus.
Oh yeah, welcome back.

Nope.

So, what would the advantages of using it as a proxy be?

I use my desktop for running anything requiring power and use the laptop for light stuff around the house or when travelling or whatever. It runs zsnes and most things well enough. By the way it's one of those little EEEs; the EPC1002HA.

I have a main computer, that's decent for most things. The laptop I have in my room... well no one would ever steal it. That's for sure. It's a Compaq LTE Lite 4/25E. A 486 processor with 8 megabytes of RAM. The baterry sucks which means it always needs to be plugged in. The power adapter stays TAPED onto the laptop since there is no port on the end of the plug. Basically the coresponding wires are stuck in the correct power slots and taped there. I installed Windows 95 B on there via floppy disks which consumed much of my time, and bought a Xircom Pocket Ethernet Adapter III since there are no ethernet ports on this. Then I put IE 5 and Windows Messenger 5.0 on there which took a long time to do correctly. I fixed it up to show some of my family members that old stuff can still be useful and fun.

So basically I use it for Internet and Messenger and DOS games.

My computer is some shiny thing from Korea. I don't feel like looking up the specifics right now, but it's really fast.

On laptops, I don't want a laptop. The portability is nice, but I'd rather have something with a mouse and full keyboard instead of a touchpad and no number pad.

What I really want is a PC power supply with a built-in battery or a battery connector.
