There's no fscking way to disable these damned things! Ustreams, embedded video players, flash games, there's no way to get rid of the ads, and they keep coming up! You either block the whole flash, or you let the whole flash play. There's no way to disable the ads!

Right, time to think of a solution.

Firefox, Adblock Plus, Subscribe to Easylist USA.

You win.

(Note, this will not work with every embedded flash ad, however quite a few of them I never see thanks to this. )

Wow, really? So like, if I were watching sails playing a Sonic game on mogulus, I wouldn't see that stupidass ad pop up overtop of the video every 10 seconds? and there'd be no +AD button on the bottom?

Depends on if the filterset catches it.

Since it does a bunch of generic "*ad/banner/*" and alike filters, and a few more complex ones too.

It might not work depending on how/where the ad is grabbed from.

I'm talking about the ads that are physically inside the flash applet itself. Kinda like gametrailers, like how some video sites (like zero punct) will show an unskippable ad video before your video will even start buffering (stupid idea, why not buffer the video while the ad plays?).

I did mean the ones inside the flash client. Adblock+ blocks off access to certain ads depending on how they are pulled.

I could be wrong however, but on this computer running adblock plus I have not seen very many ads in flash applets compared with downstairs.

Yeah, I don't know how easy it would be to block those built in ads, would be kind of tough to pull off if it's even possible.

It is possible though, I have not seen one add for chrome from youtube, I have not seen any ads in any "ad supported" flash games, even when there is

BLANK BOX
[ ]

in the flash game itself while loading.

This leads me to believe that adblock plus may work for Drag's case.

If the ad has to be fetched from a remote place, and that place is mapped to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts.txt file, then that can also disable the ads. Fo' sho.

I know what types of ads you're talking about and I've never seen them at all with Adblock Plus... so yeah, it works really well.

To be fair, I should have Adblock Plus not block ads from... certain places where I might want to support the site, but for 99.9% of all other sites it does the job very well.

The only ads I have blocked here are the flash ones.

Because really, with all the problems being reported with flash exploits lately, and with a third party ad server (even google) I just like to be safe.

Oh, I know exactly what you're talking about.

I still need to fiddle around with the security settings on my parents' laptop; I needed to log them out of Vista right away the other day after one of those "you have 'spyware' so download our product which is *really* spyware and is going to download whether you click on Yes or No hahahaha" screens popped up. Pain in the ass.

Then again, so is Vista to some extent.

Haha, my mom had this happen a few years ago. She also entered all of our credit/debit card info and address .. the works. It was great because I got blamed for it.

Some flash games have ads from MochiAds pop up for a few seconds before the game begins (usually to mask loading).

I've never had a problem with them, really.

Notice how smoothly the progress bar slides, after its initial jerkiness? That couldn't be because of mochiads delaying the progress bar in order to buy more time for the ad to show, on super fast connections, now could it?

I guess it's just that I don't have a problem with waiting 8 seconds to support a developer who is giving away their game for free.

Yeah, that's true, it's kinda like google ads in that sense.

What I *don't* like is the sites that play an unskippable video before they even start buffering the video you wanted to watch, and sites like ustream and mogulus that pop up a text ad every minute. It leads you to wonder how long it'll be, as the web dives more into web2.0+, fully java interfaces, the prominence flash apps, before these ads start taking over again with no way to block them.

With Adblock+ I never get MochiAds anymore.
Now if only I could block out those AdMob ads on my iPod...

I am not turning this into a browser war over something this silly. Though thank you for bringing up another method for people who do not use Firefox.

Just curious though, can you whitelist sites with the urlfilter.ini? Would not want sites that you support not getting support.
