But this new FMA, from what I've heard, is the same but it follows the manga all the way through.

That's what my friend was freaking out about. The anime didn't follow the manga, but I still liked it.

I really loved FMA, but, unfortunately, never really got too far in the manga (only up to, like, volume 7). If this holds true, then I'll be even more inclined to check out the new batch of Full Metal.
