| Speaking of school computers - mine recently updated their sets, but they still run Windows XP, which is odd. |

| Wow.
At my old school, the computers had NO restrictions. People could do whatever they wanted. There was, however, a contract that all students who wished to use the computers had to sign which said that students couldn't mess up the computers or go to inappropriate websites. It was a good system; no annoying security, but no worries for the teachers. Of course, this only worked because that was a very small private school (my grade had only 3 kids in it) where the students were trustworthy. |

At my school we use computers with Windows XP for business classes and Macs for art classes. The security at my school is a pain but luckily it still hasn't blocked Jul. Even if it did block websites that i go to I could still easily get around the security by using a portable web browser or by downloading another one and installing it (It's really that simple to bypass security at my school ).____________________ ![]() |

| My highschool was VERY small. As in, there were only 20 people in my graduating class, and that was more than was typical. Even classifying it as a highschool isn't quite right, as it's more K-12 with the Elementary (and cafeteria) in one building and the Jr/Sr Highschool (and auditorium) in the other, with seperate buildings for the gym, music room, and vocational agriculture. Go ahead, look that last one up. It means farming/ranching. Yeah.
So no, we never had any restrictions. Hell, if there was a computer problem in the school, the chain of command went: The Computer Literacy Teacher (unless I was already in the room or was closer) -> Me -> The IT guys that had to be called in. And if I couldn't fix it, the IT guys usually couldn't either. Of course, if I couldn't fix it, 95% chance is it was a printer. I hate printers. Moving on to college.... The computer labs at my college basically fall into three categories... The Computer Science lab: One computer, many terminals. Running Linux. No web restrictions, but everything's logged. At the end of each semester, the accounts of all non-CS-majors are deleted, and the accounts of the CS majors get their passwords reset. So, fresh accounts/passwords each semester assure that only the people who are supposed to be using the lab are using the lab. CS majors' accounts are also deleted after they've not enrolled in any CS classes for a couple semesters (be it because of graduation, change of major, or whatever). Communication/Art Department labs: Macs. No web filters. Some things are blocked on most of them (chess, lol), but nothing that really gets in the way. I've only run into one where I couldn't access the system settings, which only annoyed me because it had one of those mice with the scroll balls and the left/right scroll was set to the back/forward buttons for web browsing. So you'd be casually scrolling down a page and then- Ooops you moved your finger slightly to the left, you've suddenly moved back one or more pages in your browsing history.
Anyway, I don't really have problems with the restrictions on the macs, just the macness of them (some of them have mice without right-click). They all basically have the same username/pass for the non-admin account, but if you weren't in the Art/Comm departments you wouldn't know it. General Computer labs (most of them): Windows XP, bullshit restrictions, I'm not aware of any web filters, but it wouldn't surprise me. I basically never use these, and am better off for it. That's why I can't think of any specifics on the restrictions off the top of my head. BONUS CATEGORY: Wireless network: My college also has an open wireless network, which doesn't really have a filter, but it does have restrictions on what you're allowed to use it for (assuming you can get a signal, which is near impossible across most of the campus). Gaming? Ban. Torrents (even if they're legal)? Ban. Generous illegal downloading? Ban. I'm pretty sure the banning is just done through a MAC address filter, and it's cleared every semester. The school likes to boast a bit about how it provides the internet for the students (of course, it's coming out of our fees), but basically everyone I know who lives on campus signs up for cable internet, because besides the restrictions, the nigh-non-existent signal strength, and a speed that's barely better than 56k, the school network is just not worth using.... Except in certain non-dorm areas, via a laptop. ____________________ |
