Because it is assumed that the user has enough knowledge to make their own URL code (either by using [url] or <a href>), not to mention being easily broken. Welcome to having freedom of using HTML.

Opera also has a feature which allows you to highlight text and select "Go to URL", which is convinient.

In the amount of time it took me to put URL tags around the aforementioned URL, I could've posted it, typed something else, etc. It saves a lot of time, especially when dealing with multiple links in a single post. I don't see how you can argue this. |

Like I said, the problem arises because we allow HTML.
For example, pasting a URL into a link will create... another link. This goes for pretty much any sort of URL, since they have many purposes in HTML.
This forum doesn't, and likely won't, support it.

So there's no way to program the forum to automatically place URL tags around a link that doesn't have them, simply because the forum is set up to allow the use of HTML?
It really is nothing for me to put tags in myself, but Christ, it just seems so stupid to not have the feature. |

Unlike other forums, URLs are used in more than just the context of BBCode filler. Checking to see if it's already wrapped in [img][/img] or [url][/url] is simple; checking if it's in one of the myrad of ways you can use one in HTML isn't.
If you're seriously that upset over it, bug hydrapheetz.

I meant to say "doesn't have them", if that means anything.
The fact of the matter is that a URL without URL tags around them is usually expected to automatically become a link unless coded otherwise. If this is not how you guys want things handled, then by all means carry on. You're not upsetting me or whatever. I just like being able to save time, and the position of keys required to type...
[url][/url] or <a href=""></a> or whatever
...makes the simple task of inserting a quick link in any post take longer than it normally does when I do it anywhere else on the internet.
Just saying. Close thread. |

Who knows, maybe when I fix the post toolbar I'll add a shortcut for ctrl-whatever.

And yet all of this is a non-issue if you are using Linkification.

I'm sure if this were in the original coding, none of you would be complaining to remove it in favor of Mozilla's system. It's a feature request people! There will always be a turn around, or short cut, or alternative, or just another way of doing it. Posting alternatives in this thread will not change the fact that there isn't a feature in the board to do it, it simply masks the problem. Complaining that said requester is lazy to me is not justification for not attempting to make such a thing under the convenience of others!
