For WHATEVER damned reason, my Windows Installer service is on the fritz. I've taken the last half-day or so to come up with a solution to this and I've yet to get it working right.

Constant errors of 'Cannot start Windows Installer Service. Install service may be corrupt.' or somesuch...

I've tried the method of unregistering and reregistering the service in Safe Mode. No dice.

I've tried upgrading to Windows Installer 4.5. No dice.

I've tried uninstalling via Command Interpreter (as shown on MS's site) and renaming the files and then overwriting them with a fresh install. No dice.

I have this feeling I'm going to have to reinstall Windows at this pace. The only problem is that I'm going to have to grab a dated copy of XP and I don't really want to at this point...since I'd have to go through the motions of XP SP3 upgrades...so I'm wanting to get some input on this before I send up the white flag.

I might just do it later today anyways if I don't get any feedback on this whatsoever...because I've sure tried a lot as it is and I doubt there's many other options...

Well, if you do end up having to start fresh, you can always use a Windows XP ISO and slipstream service packs and hotfixes in with nLite...

I'd aslo check this, but... yeah.

Maybe some of the various MS tools linked here will help?

Did all those, actually.

Issue's resolved - reinstalled XP. Thankfully I keep backups...
