You and the word "procrastination" get along very well, I find.

Get cracking.

So it's basically a take-home exam and not really an essay since it's divided into questions, I suppose.

I liked take-home exams but not when two of them are due on the same day.

It's more like an essay-but-not-an-essay. Basically like, an essay in outline format.

[02:03:57] <@FirePhoenix> Example:
[02:03:58] <@FirePhoenix> 2. What are the author’s motives for writing the text (authorial intent)?
[02:03:58] <@FirePhoenix> a) to criticize environmentalists
[02:03:58] <@FirePhoenix> -- “Their goal is to turn out the lights on our industrial society.”
[02:03:58] <@FirePhoenix> --The author considers environmentalists a barrier to Capitalism.
[02:04:05] <@FirePhoenix> the number is the question
[02:04:20] <@FirePhoenix> the a) is the point you're addressing
[02:04:27] <@FirePhoenix> then there's a quote you need to find
[02:04:30] <@FirePhoenix> then you explain the quote
[02:04:40] <@FirePhoenix> it's not hard, just tedious
[02:04:44] <@FirePhoenix> and boring

Oh, I remember having one or two assignments like that! What I usually did was answer all the parts and then edit stuff together to make it flow.

Those kind of English assignments is what made me hate English...

I'd rather take Creative Writing or something...

This isn't even English. This is a Critical Thinking course.

Update: I ran headlong into a wall after question 4. Bleh, tired....but can't sleep until it's done...

I never ran across that being a requirement when I was in college...the only real thing that comes close is Speech class.

I had English 202 and it seemed less retarded than this.

Speaking of retarded requirements, the English classes you take here depend on whether you passed the AP or not:

If you didn't pass the AP and got under 600 points on that section of the College Board exam, you have to take Basic English I and II, and Intermediate English I and II.

If you didn't pass the AP but got 600+ on that section of the College Board, you start at Intermediate English I and II, and two more of your choice.

If you passed the AP, you automatically start at Advanced English I and are required to take II back-to-back (read: can't avoid the research paper), which sucks because I actually tried going for Creative Writing but couldn't because of that stupid restriction.

Now I'm stuck doing a 6-page research paper on Shakespeare with obscene limitations on sources and having to learn the part of Iago in Othello for next week's presentation. Not fun, especially considering how pathetically easy Advanced I seemed in comparison

Works the same way here for the most part except that also applies to Mathematics.

Needless to say, they started me out in Calc I when I jumped into college. That was a mistake.

I began to loathe English when it went from syntax and grammar to essays and papers.

I just can't do essays. Seriously, nothing helps.

I didn't even take the English AP test so I'll be in low English whatever. No complaint there, English is NOT my favorite subject, by far.

English classes, as a whole, PISS ME OFF. I can't stand them. I just can't analyze so deeply into a book, it drives me nuts!

I can do English classes as long as the teacher doesn't suck. Believe it or not...I've had that.

Tell you a story...I went through my Junior year hating the piss out of English class. Did my job on the ACT and scored a 22 on the English part of it (out of 36).

Had a KICKASS (though now deceased) teacher in my senior year. I mean you couldn't make them much better than this one. So much so in fact that my second try at the English section the following year yielded a score of 28.

I just figured out what application English had to me and the rest was history. I couldn't really care piss about what other uses there are if it's not an application I can't use. I can't really actively pick out debate topics out my ass because the teacher is too lazy to teach what real English is...or even go so far as to do Reading Comprehension over what an author was thinking when they SPLORT ERNEST HEMINGWAY HAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHOOOOOO...

So no...I had -1- total GOOD English teacher...and that was enough for me.

Huh, me and Xkeeper have the same stance about English class.

I dread doing it when I'm done with Geography in the alt school I currently go to. That and History....

It's awesome that you had an awesome English teacher, Hiryuu. I had an awesome Math teacher in grade 10, before we moved. Where most other teachers ask you to cover shirts that say "ass" or "fuck", he asked to borrow my shirt (which says "ARE YOU READY FOR AN ASS KICKIN'?" as a beer advertisement) for a parent-teacher conference.

Schmonkeys.

I've had the luck of several good English teachers. My favorite also taught my parents, 30 years ago.

He routinely scares away bad students who don't want to learn, and then picks on other students who usually don't pay attention. Since he also does psychology, he's really good at getting people who try to zing him.

He can give hard assignments, but he's easy to get a good grade with if you try your best.
