via Starmen.net.
This explains its removal from Brawl, among other things.... but even then, it's complete and utter bullshit. |

 | | Appears circumstantial at first glance. But yeah, I think the events added together confirm it. Even though Nintendo isn't giving a straight answer themselves.

Kudos to Nintendo for being douchebags once again when it comes to EB in general.

It really doesn't matter too much but it's just another point that EB is a game loved by fans only...not the company that it came from.

Or maybe they love it so much that they don't want it changed. Who knows. |

You didn't read the article, did you? It says quite clearly that EarthBound was only given a rating because the ESRB made an internal mistake.
Anyway, why bother with waiting for Nintendo to do it? You could easily make an EarthBound VC channel with the proper tools...

I read it was a mistake...but I would wonder why there would have been a consideration for a rating in the first place. You don't usually make 'mistakes' with the ESRB.

I really don't know if I buy that explanation.
I mean, first off... how can the ESRB make an INTERNAL MISTAKE?!? Obviously at some point Nintendo had to submit the title to them, they're not just going to pull games out of their ass and rate them.
I also think that if Nintendo was going to get sued for some of the references in the game, it would have happened back in 1995.

If I had to guess, a mistake could have occurred as a result of Brawl. Recall that Brawl JP had Earthbound in it, while the US one didn't; if the ESRB was sent an earlier version of Brawl US before EB was removed, the rating could have been based on that rather than the game as released.
And... umm... Earthbound was a relatively low-profile release back in 1995. I'm not sure anyone would have bothered with lawsuits for a game that wasn't... well... Mortal Kombat. Considering that Melee was enough to push Fire Emblem into being released in the US, the combination of 64/Melee/Brawl may have been enough to make Earthbound noticed well enough to invite lawsuits. |

Well, not only that, but it was pretty much a commercial failure over here, not just a quiet release. The SSB series may indeed have propelled it into a high enough popularity to get itself targeted.

What exactly are the sales figures on that compared to, say, Chrono Trigger? |

Earthbound sold around 140,000 in the US (440,000 overall). Chrono Trigger sold roughly 290,000 in the US (2.65 million overall).
Unfortunately, the official sources (S-E pamphlets, etc.) don't separate CT SNES from CT PSX, so it's liable to be a bit lower on both sides. VG Chartz lists the SNES version at 280,000 US/2.31 million total, but it also lists Earthbound as 800,000 in Japan (with nothing on the US release).
The EB sales were grabbed from here. |

I imagine that's really skewed, since CT PSX came with FFVI, which many consider to be the best FF game. |

Actually, it was packed with FFIV.
FFVI was with FFV, at least in the US.
I think the Japanese releases were separate, not sure about Europe. |
