There is no easy correlation between the size of a MIDI file and the .m64 output, it depends how the data is laid out. As for the size problem (14k being the limit of a .m64 file currently), that's because bigger sequences overflow the destined area in RAM (not ROM) and end up corrupting nearby music data.

I have been trying to get them to load into extended memory, which would overcome this limitation, however so far it has proven to be a very complicated task because there seems to be a specific memory pool for music data.

i saved a music xml in musescore and opened it in the xml importer and it says: Input string is not in the correct format and i made sure i saved it as XML and some other songs are working but not this and another one their file sizes are 3336KB and 6278KB so if you can help that would be great

You have to tell us how it gets messed up, otherwise no one can help you.

So at Bob-Omb Battlefield, the music starts randomly lagging "completely."

Do you mean it stops, or does it slow down and stop, or does it go deeper in sound? Not that I can explain how to fix it, but this information is needed for those who can help you to actually help you.

A recording of it failing, of course, would be best.

So it was a problem with your microphone, not with the music in your hack? Just so I can make it clear to the others that they shouldn't waste their time with it.

:o

dude, they're too big. 1200kb sounds pretty good for a relatively complex xml file. try to make them not so massive and see if it fixes anything.

You're not using the obj importer to import xml files into the game right? You're using the xml importer?

If it's not that idk whats wrong.

Try a simpler song (like tetris) and tell me if it still happens. Frauber probably has a better answer than I do, but to me it seems like your xml files are too long, notation-wise. Too many pages of notes.

In almost every level I'm having an annoying problem where the imported music stops playing after any other sound effect is played (eg. sign post, star appears. You can see this glitch in the Bob-Omb Island Video). If anyone knows how to fix this i'd greatly appreciate it.

ya tetris worked but do ya think if i deleted some tracks that weren't that important it would work?

Yup, it would definitely work. I've done that a couple times. Also if the midi file loops within the file itself, you might want to get rid of the extra loops, that would help. You know what I'm referring to right?

For example:

*shameless plug*
At the 1:00 mark the song starts over again. You can cut out everything after that part of the song and set it to loop in-game with the obj importer's music function and it'll work fine.

Celux: I have no idea, sorry. I know the music gets quieter permanently sometimes when reading a signpost but that's about it.

i think its just because of musescore, but i dont have the money to spend on one of the fancy-schmancy programs
and its the error thats the problem, its not mentioned anywhere else in this thread

Hey Frauber, if you ever go back to this you should really add a way to add a drum track. You know, @127 or whatever it was. No pressure or anything, I'm pretty much out of the hacking loop at this point. Maybe I'll start up during the summer or something.

Unfortunately I'm also totally out of the hacking loop, probably until late this year. You can hack it yourself by opening the .m64 file and changing the 0xC1 (set instrument) command value to 0x7F.

For instance, say your file has 4 channels, the last one being the drums. Open a hex editor, find the fourth 0xC1 byte, and change the value after it to 0x7F.
