There was a helicopter here. It's gone now. The only proof of its existence is a smouldering cockpit, and the exploded remains of a rocket with a trollface.

(disclaimer: I've had the idea to create this thread for a while now, but wasn't sure if anyone was going to reply. Erp.)

  • Vim - Vi IMproved
A nice, fast, and ridiculously powerful text editor that (erp) has a generally sharp learning curve.

  • Irssi - win32 builds
The only IRC client that manages to not piss me off´┐Ż. Scriptable with perl~.

  • VLC Media Player
A freeware thread needs mention of this. Always. That and it generally plays everything pretty decently.

Software mentioned in this thread (as of 07/13/08)

Firefox.
Also Pidgin, Console2, Filezilla, and BitTornado, but I'm too lazy to make links to them.

... I knew I was missing a few

Actually we should seriously compile a list of these if the thread gets large enough.

And then of course, straight from my sig, there's Various DS homebrew, OpenOffice, 7zip and NirSoft.

Looking through my Start menu I also see Translhextion (hex editor), Tile Layer Pro, Tile Molester and YY-Chr (tile editors), Exact Audio Copy (CD copier), WinLAME (audio encoder), VirtualDub (AVI editor), AVG (antivirus), and TightVNC (remote control). I'd also plug my own apps, but I'd need a host.

And let's not forget Linux

Foxit
Because no one wants to download a 23 MB installer when they can have a ~2MB installer.

aMSN
This is for people who only have msn contacts and don't want Windows live shiting all over their system, also for macs and linux.

Firefox Users:
Noscript | Ad-block plus | cookiesafe

Noscript is a nice everything is bad until you say it is good system*. It helps keep javascript, java, flash, and other(s) from being a pain.
Now attempts to block XSS too.

Adblock because, well...

HI, HEY, YO HELLO CLICK ME I AM A TALKING FLASH AD

Cookiesafe is just easy cookie managing for the lazy, it also like noscript uses a beverything is bad until you say it is good system*.

*Blacklist or is it whitelist based?

Edit: Firebug, a useful little web development tool that makes working on webpages easier. It also does javascript work too...

utorrent: Awesome low size bit-torrent client. It combines lots of features with low size and cpu usage. Note that there has been rumors that all versions after 1.6.1 sends information to movie companies and the like... But that shouldn't be a problem if you are legal right... right?

Which can be used with greasemonkey.

However, lets not start a fireflux/operasinger thread, k?

Partially fixed. Still missing gigantic images and having it move around and change colours.

Also:
Blender is a free 3D modeller
Really Slick Screensavers is bloody cool (powerful CPU/GPU required)

WinRAR is kinda better than sevenzip right now, even if it does have a nag screen.

7Zip is comming along though, maybe we can add files to archives by drag and drop soon.

Though honestly I've been wondering with the junk that comes included in the installers lately if Winamp is still worth recommending. :-/
