Magic: The Gathering on Cockatrice. I'm giving myself a few days where I only play FOSS games (or proprietary games on FOSS clients), and making myself take a step away from MTG Arena has got me pushing over the hump of playing with strangers on Cockatrice. It's a very manual, paper-like experience and when no one's on voice and you're just playing through game chat, there's a lot of conventions and norms around playing on there that are hard to learn for my anxious ass. It's worth it though, this is probably my favorite way to play the game since I can't really play paper here.

Also Xonotic. I have good memories of MegaGlest and 0ad is a good time, so I sort of want to find people to play those with...I love rts.

I played Mario Party Superstars for a while. It was a lot of fun. I don't think I'm done with it, but I haven't played since early last week, hence the past-tense.

It seems to me that Nintendo is really releasing this one for the fans. A lot of the complaints that I've heard about Super Mario Party are resolved. Everything is just faster and a bit more polished. Like most remakes, I find that it makes me want to play the original games, but more than that, I really appreciate the quality-of-life improvements. Overall solid effort. If you enjoyed the older Mario Party games, but want to see them updated a bit, give it a try.

I was at a LAN-Party last weekend and played lot's of Parachute on Game Boy Gallery 3 (Game & Watch Gallery 2) on my Super Famicom.

Strange, but that's something I do at LAN-Parties.

Also played Gyruss on the NES. A great port of a cool game.

NES version of Gyruss is a good time sink. Brutal, but good. Think the best I've done is Mars before I was out of lives the last time I tried.

playing Wagamama Fashion: GIRLS MODE Tokimeki Up! (what a mouthful) also known as Style Savvy: Trendestters in north america and Nintendo Presents: New Fashion Boutique (also a mouthful) in europe and oceania

specifically the japanese version as reading practice, it's really tough and i'm often lost as to wtf i'm even being told a decent chunk of the time, but i'm kinda learning vocab as i go

i don't have that hard of a time understanding the very base request of customers though since most clothing item names as well as style names are english words borrowed into japanese, it's more just the surrounding dialogue i'm struggling with a bit

Been playing a lot of VR lately, at the expense of my non-VR games of which there's multiple I need to get around to finishing lol

I've mainly been playing Pavlov and Grapple Tournament, I love the gun mechanics in the former but I love the latter for being a pretty decent modern VR take on arena shooters like Unreal Tournament, though it does admittedly make me sick sometimes hehe

Been playing Quake III's singleplayer campaign and Jazz Jackrabbit 2. Both very good games, I enjoy tight movement in games. I just suck at multiplayer games, so I don't play a lot of movement shooters.

I recently chose to play through Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (via 3DS) whenever I needed to pass the time, since the last time I really played it was when it first released. I wouldn't call it one of the better Kirby games, but the exploration idea is neat. I like the idea of exploring a big, interconnected, maze-like world and hunting down treasure.

However, playing it again reminded me of its flaws. The amount of available abilities feels small, even though it has just as many as Kirby's Adventure, due to how rare or situational some are. Cupid is fine, Smash is wonderful, Magic is just a gimmicky Cook, Mini is for specific puzzles, and Missile is so difficult to use that I always end up dying because of it.

Treasure hunting would be more enjoyable if the "treasures" weren't often just regular food pickups. Sure, they are more useful than collectible items, but it feels like a waste of time when the chest is locked behind a mini-boss that damaged you more than the food heals you. At least with The Great Cave Offensive, you could view the treasure you've collected.

The bosses are varied, but they aren't particularly great. Some of their gimmicks make them very difficult with certain abilities (or no ability) and ridiculously easy with others. Destroying a boss in a matter of seconds doesn't feel very rewarding, especially if you didn't plan for it. For example, the shark boss can be defeated with one Stone attack. My least favorite boss is the final boss, Dark Mind. The first phase is fine, even though for some reason you have to fight it four times in a row, but the second phase is a pain. Even with the game's ultimate weapon, it takes way too many hits to defeat him. His primary attacks are carried out by little mirrors that zoom around the screen faster than you can react, even when you're expecting them. Attacks are also look the same and can have variants, which makes it trickier to predict. I died like 11-13 times on this boss.

Anyway, I ended up 100%-ing the game. I only looked up a map twice, once to find the Mustard Mountain map (intentionally obscured by having the path divided across two areas) and a chest in Carrot Castle that requires you to fall down a pit that you would assume would kill you.


The Rainbow Route music is the best.

The AI in Amazing Mirror is just really... bad. The other Kirbies are always in other areas doing nothing, and when you call them they're almost useless. I still got to around 94% completed, and the different colors you can wear are probably the coolest thing about that game aside from the exploration.

I don't know of any copy abilities that stuck out to me, but they really need to bring back Metal Kirby from Squeak Squad.
