I have been playing through the original NES Zelda on 3DS, no save states. Aside from getting some pointers by watching GameGrumps and looking at a map once or twice, I've figured out most of it on my own.

Blue Wizzrobes suck.

I recently picked up a copy of Wind Waker and accidentally reminded myself how much fun it is.

I can't get enough of Link's silly expressions.

Just got Baba Is You. What a really clever idea for a puzzle game!

It's great game but some levels are giving me some serious headaches, in a good way that is.

Yeah, oh my go so far I'm stuck on 3-11 and nothing is sticking out at me to actually DO, inside or outside of the box.

The next game I'm buying is for certain Baba is You. This is a really clever idea for a puzzle game and I love it just by looking at it. I specially love that part of the trailer where you are the key and you open the door with Baba. It's such a good way to explain the main twist of the game.

Other than that, recently I've played The Beginner's Guide and I realized that I have motion sickness during first-person games. Like, I remember being a bit dizzy back when I played 007: Agent Under Fire for the GameCube but I never really thought much of it until now. It doesn't help that the game doesn't have any FOV settings and that changing the resolution breaks the UI. After that, I played a bit of Crypt of the NecroDancer (finally) and it's kinda fun. Took a while to get used to the controls and I clutched the hell out of Zone 1 though. I was dying left and right due to misunderstanding the rhythm and I got to the boss on low health, and I won with only one heart left!

Been playin' some Hypnospace Outlaw, which is a game about browsing a fake alternate-universe version of GeoCities. It's extremely good and I highly recommend you pick it up.

YOU'RE A COP IN FAKE GEOCITIES IT'S PRETTY COOL DESPITE BEING A COP

here's a 40 minute video on it, it's an unconventional puzzle game and it nails what it's going for real well

I got the new star fox game as an anniversary gift from my wife.

By which I mean I got given Starlink: Battle for Atlas. It's pretty cool. I'm bad at it.

I beat Zelda 1 not long after my previous post. I forgot to mention that, besides not using save states, I also only used "continue" after each death instead of reloading saves or anything.

While I was waiting for my routine car check-up, I started playing The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. I thought I had played some of it already, but it turns out that I had just watched some of it on Vinesauce. So far, the controls are good, but the world of Hyrule feels so small. It's weird to see that 1/3 of the world is already revealed when you get your map just because you traveled to Hyrule Castle. The rest of the game so far is kinda quirky. Why do they explicitly recommend rolling as a faster method of travel? It seems like something you'd see in a fan game. The story events feel rather contrived, like when the carpenters decide to hammer wood in front of the return path just so that you are forced to enter the town from the south for the Kinstone Bag cutscene, which itself feels contrived.

The game is really pretty, though. The Minish are adorable.

been playing SSX 3 a lot the past few weeks. it's really one of the few Extreme Sports games that just feels... timeless? and there's just nothing that i can get tired of. and it looks absolutely amazing! they made it playable for the xbox one recently and from what i've seen it looks incredible but playing it on my PS2 it still looks so so good. have everything dialed except for golds on the peak 2 and 3 challenge goals, and a gold on the totally brutal Kick Doubt... the difficulty is perfect though and i can always feel myself improving. the sense of accomplishment when i finally gold that course will be immense. but yeah, it's such a good game. still fresh!

-update: i did it! golds in everything! all of them! still lots to do of course

Maze of Galious

probably better known as "that hard MSX game that inspired La-Mulana"

it's a game where if your husband dies before you go to world 1 you have to make a huge detour to get either Bread or visit Death to revive him
which will happen easily because it is very easy to die in this

therer's only password saves, whith 45 character passwords, which would make you want to savestate, except you need to use passwords to reset failed puzzle states and there's no convenient way to restore health anywhere

the bread is hidden behind moving platforms with annoying enemies that you get only one shot at per continuing, it's a very ridiculous jump that everytime you fail it's back to 45 chararcter password and walking all over again

the alternative is finding a bunch of hidden items to be able to enter a hidden shop where Death is

THAT SAID, it is a fun game, i just found it funny the amount of trouble you can get into if you mess up going to the first dungeon

I actually own the Famicom version of that one! I've seen a playthrough of the MSX game, but I have yet to play that one myself.

That being said, I actually like the game quite a bit myself, even though the difficulty is a bit up there.

so 3:21 through 3:38 is among the raddest things i've done in sekiro so far

this game is a blast and finally overcoming a tough boss is such a fantastic feeling. i shouted out as soon as that i was able to make that deathblow FROM MIDAIR

there's been a lot of discourse lately (as it happens with each and every fromsoftware release) on difficulty/accessibility--i'd love to see celeste-like options in a fromsoft title one day so that more people can experience what i did after fine-tuning certain game mechanics to their ability/preference

the famicom version is very different from what i know? it seems to be clunky but have QoL stuff this one probably could have

that said i'm having a lot of fun with it, though i hit a literal and metaphorical wall in one of the dungeons

semi-relatedly, accesibility in games where stupid difficulty is part of their point is something i've put a lot of thought into for very, very long
ultimately the big thing isn't the (mostly flawed) idea of "difficulty" a "there's Normal and then easy and hard" scale says, but rather the key stuff is in concepts like giving freedom, messing up and make mistakes, play around and generally choose how to play
