Dude.

Persona 5 is fucking great. It's filling the Zelda-shaped hole in my schedule, and everything about it is just stylish as hell.

Yooka-Laylee got released and I got my key the day before, so I had a play. Didn't think much of it, so I left it alone for a bit. Dad got a key for the PS4, so I played it on that too. After about 4 hours, I feel pretty confident in my thought that it's shit. It's a shame. I've been looking forward to it since I backed it, but I can't stand to play it.

On the upside, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2 hit Steam early access, so I grabbed that, so at least I have a game to replace Yooka-Laylee.

Now I'm curious, why did you find it bad? :o

Been meaning to pick it up myself..., once I can afford to.

Camera is awful, even after a pre-release patch to fix the camera, so that's great for a platformer. The controls are slippery so making jumps is awkward, which is also great for a platformer. It doesn't feel particularly responsive, so I'm forever running in to enemies instead of actually hitting them, or falling off ledges instead of actually jumping. Though I've only played the first world, the levels aren't particularly memorable. Levels in Banjo-Kazooie were fairly memorable in that different areas were clearly separated in terms of looks, and having some identifying landmark, whereas the first level in Yooka-Laylee just all blends together, so I never have a sense of direction, though that might be something that's just solved with time. But the rest of the game is so off-putting, I'm not going to bother putting in the time anyway. I also think the level is too big, and it might have been better served by having more, smaller levels, though that's just my preference. The one Rextro's arcade game I've reached is horrible, which doesn't show much promise for the rest of them.

There's probably a few more things I've forgotten. Either way, it's not something I'm going to be playing much more of.

Puyo Puyo is pretty fun. Chain-making can get strategic and more so when making long chains. I think it's a better puzzle game than Tetris.

Puyo Tetris' Swap mode is literally the only vs puzzle game you'll ever need again. :p

Also!

I am also playing Yooka-Laylee...my Mac mini runs it authentically N64-like....low res, with frame drops and popup

I also am replaying Chrono Trigger because I was on a houseboat for three days.

Just finished up Ghost Recon Wildlands with Kazinsal.

The final mission really soured us on the experience.

Also been doing a full series run (sorta) of Final Fantasy. Up to 5 now, finished the Pyramid. I'm skipping Sequel installments in most cases because they're of wildly variable quality (The After Years, in which your sailing ship needs oil for its engine..?) or just outright stupid (the entire extended Final Fantasy 7 shitshow). Haven't completely decided on the 13 trilogy, I get the feeling that's going to depend more on how I feel at the end of 13 - unlike the earlier sequel/tacked-on examples, I believe that was intended to be multiple games from the start, so it shouldn't have the same type of idiocy.

Skipping 11 entirely, MMO, and 14's not going to count for this either for the same reason.

What spurred this on is that I hadn't actually finished most of the games - prior to this, only 1, 4, and 5 in the main series, plus the Tactics games.

Some other JRPGs are being thrown in for variety - Lufia 2, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound in the SNES section, and Legend of Dragoon, Lunar: SSSC, and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue in the PS1 era. Of these, I'd only finished CT, Earthbound, and Lunar prior to this, and finished Lufia 2 before the FF4 run in this series.

13-2 is a very stupid and convoluted game, but in my experience it was quite tongue in cheek about it, it almost felt like a parody of a FF game more than an actual FF game.

I like it quite a bit, and it's definitely an improvement over 13, but it's quite the silly game overall.

Right, a different type of idiocy. Not the type that has you getting sidetracked from a very important objective because you need to get more fuel so your sailing ship can keep going.

More fuel.

For a sailing ship. With visible sails.

I am not a fan of The After Years.

Anyway! Finished 5. Bahamut and Neo Exdeath were both denied the use of their most dangerous attacks (Megaflare and Grand Cross respectively) by way of dying too fast. It's been a long time since I played a mostly unrestricted game - character jobs were limited by crystal, more for a bit of forced variety than anything else.

Lightning returns is a difference beast entirely. It's a very different game..., and also not a very long one from my understanding.

I kinda gave up on it when I played it, because keyboard and mouse is shit for it. I should give it another try now that I have a M$ gamepad though.

Picked up the Serious Sam collection, so I took a break from Mass Effect 2 to play it. TFE, while fun, is really irritating. The idea of mowing down hordes of enemies with a minigun sounds great, but after a while, the game just throws garbage at you. Definitely a game where abusing the quick-save function is necessary. Happily, Serious Sam 3 is much improved over TFE and TSE, so I'll definitely enjoy playing that. Just got to decide whether I want to abandon TFE/TSE, carry on with TFE as is, or start again on a lower difficulty. It's getting to the point where it's not fun.

The past few weeks I've played through the PC versions of Mega Man X7 & X8. I suspect I could write quite a bit about my thoughts. I'm more or less done now with a run of X7 while rescueing everyone. I wouldn't recommend doing that.

Although X8 is definitely better made (and installed easier, due to some korean text encoding change messing up first the X7 installer and then the cd check) I do like X7 more, mostly because of the cast. Vanishing Gungaroo being my favorite maverick helps as well.

I recently finished Batman: Arkham Knight. Bought it a while ago after WB finally fixed the PC port, but only recently actually got in to it. For me, it's the best Arkham game. While not as polished as Arkham City was, Arkham Knight has some incredible moments that masterfully played with my emotions, and really put it at the top.

I guess now that's done, I can focus more on Nier: Automota. Need to finish that before SGDQ starts, given the marathon opens with a run of ending A.
