Like it or not, a majority of the southern US pretty much is your stereotypical white Republican.

I love how you stereotype The South as though you lived here and have actually interacted with the people. I know a lot of people who could talk to you and tell you a far-left opinion, but I guess you're too busy letting the media give you and "accurate report" to really investigate for yourself what we are, what we have a strong opinion about, and why it is that way.

Cute, but remember that being able to show x does not mean that x is suddenly significant. For example, we have three women on the forum, but that does not mean the overwhelming majority of our users aren't male.

iirc, $69M (or somewhere around there) is actually the cap on liabilities for this kind of crap. And you only get one guess to which party in Washington is making sure it stays that way.


(bonus point: some idiots on the other side are too, but I think the best argument so far was "but those little mom & pop oil companies will go bankrupt from having to pay bigger fines ")

I assume you mean little, as in, "little to do," which is wrong from what I'm told. Republicans do want more State Government involvement, rather than Federal Government. This is the majority of the south. Your stereotype claims they don't want any government intervention within the private sector, which isn't true. Maybe for some of the very far-right ones ( Anarchists? ), however, I'm seeing a different reality. I also don't see how not wanting a Federal Government to have an ass load of uncontrolled power correlates to wanting it to have absolutely no power. Ahh, didn't know that. So, that means this could keep spilling for who knows how long, keep spreading northwards and ruin even more beaches and habitats and we still cannot fine them anymore...

Cleaning all those affected areas will require some serious cooperation from locals, not just the government.

I'm sorry, let me clarify:

Yes, the majority are Republicans who want less government. You believe that because they want less government too, but to you, less government means no government whatsoever, including help during state crisis. In contrast, Republicans want less uncontrolled power going to the Federal Government, or any part of government really. It doesn't mean they're not willing to accept any help from the Federal Government, which I think is a wrong assumption that you made, it just means they don't want the Federal Government to have abusable power.

What I get from all that is highlighted:


  • 1 - Majority of the south would like there to be less Federal Government.
  • 2 - The tea-party movement in the south is anti-federal government.
  • 3 - "little government" is defined as an inoperative Federal Government.
  • 4 - They complain when their "little government" fails to act.


How does wanting a less corruptible federal government correlate to one that does not work? You're assuming, what I said as "stereotyping", that they, the majority of the south, want a government that just doesn't do anything, and when they need help they complain when the government doesn't do enough. It is true, the majority of the people in 'the south' belong to an ideology that would like a less corruptible government. What isn't true is that they want one that simply doesn't work; one that doesn't do anything.

I'm kinda ticked that Obama is getting all the hate aimed at him. Seriously, he is doing his best to help solve the issue. BP should be the people we're chasing with pitchforks and torches.

On the bright side, and it has probably been mentioned but I'm too lazy to read the majority of this topic right now, we now have another motive to find a better, cheaper, more environmentally friendly way to get our cars a going.

Some blogs are reporting that John Boehner Thinks Taxpayers Should Bail Out BP ... ?


Does that sound insane to you in this environment in which the congress is refusing to extend unemployment benefits? Me too. But John Boehner is actually pushing it:


Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry…and it seems leading Republicans. In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner backed Tom Donohue, President of the Chamber of Commerce, in saying taxpayers should help pick up the tab.

“I think the people responsible in the oil spill–BP and the federal government–should take full responsibility for what’s happening there,” Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning.

On Friday, Donohue made clear that he opposes efforts to stick BP, a member of the Chamber, with the bill. “It is generally not the practice of this country to change the laws after the game,” he said. “Everybody is going to contribute to this clean up. We are all going to have to do it. We are going to have to get the money from the government and from the companies and we will figure out a way to do that.”


One very clever thing about this is the fact that they are framing this spill as being the equal fault of BP and the Federal government, which means it’s all the fault of an oil company and the Democrats.

The article says that Democrats will jump all over this, and one would certainly hope so. Unfortunately, I would bet some big money that quite a few Dems will join in and give it some bipartisan cover. Mary Landrieu certainly will.

Oil spill may be twice as bad as earlier thought

No shit, really? When you first went by estimates from the company at fault... you gotta think its much worse than they would report. Its an oil volcano spewing its guts for the past month and a half. I'm about ready to say nuke the fucking thing if it stops it. If this doesn't get contained within 2 weeks, it will have been spewing for 2 months. Thats just unimaginable.
