So why are they playing the blame game with Bush? Pelosi was all over that last week, accusing that administration as the problem.

Then again many did the point-the-fingers thing at Bush with Katrina.

Bush did fuck up Katrina by actively and outright denying aid to New Orleans, as well as his impeccable choices for who should lead FEMA. Heckuva job Brownie, etc. List goes on.

Funny, Bush actually did something without taking a over a month. You do realize Obama could have approved Jindal's mud barriers and endangered portions of the Louisiana coast would have been sheltered by now. Of course they're just sitting back because doing shit, supposedly, is above the pay grade of the executive branch.

It was stated by a few other experts that those "barriers" would wash away at the first storm and basically do nothing to help.

Consider also that the administration has been lied to left and right by BP ("1,000 barrels per day" when it's actually well over 10,000, "not our oil plumes", "dispersant totally safe, these illnesses are just food poisoning") ... There is not much that can really be done other than criminal prosecution of BP... and even then (iirc) they're limited in the amount of damage they'd have to pay out to about $75 million, which is pretty much a day's profits if not less.

Whereas by comparison, FEMA and Bush did damn near nothing to help prepare for Katrina, including ignoring offers of assistance, instead choosing to sit around and wait, even with all kinds of signs from meteorologists stating that the hurricane would be massive (and especially after it hit, where everything from local to foreign aid was turned down/denied).


Tiny, tiny difference.

Devil's advocate here, what do you think the GOP talking point would be if Barack stepped in and stomped BP to bits, took all its money to pay for the cleanup and then used every bit in its power to clean up the spill and stop it at any cost?

I think if anything he should just shrug and go "You know what, I don't care anymore. I've done more things to try and appease my critics than even those in my party would put up with, and all it has gotten me is even more criticism. I may as well do whatever I want, as it'll be the same as if I pandered to everyone who criticized me anyway."

In all truth, Ronald Reagan himself could be president, and it'd still be a disaster. Last time I checked, anyway, presidents don't cause oil spills. Oil companies do. :p

Spills like this aren't going to go away, whatever you do, anyway. Not as long as oil is in use--even if all the proper procedures are used, oil is not a clean thing. If you want oil as other wells around the world continue to dry up, you should just get used to spills like this--drilling offshore will equal messes like this at one time or another, Republican or Democrat, free enterprise or communist.

Unlike Hurricanes, the only work one can do is to try and prevent it--things which were not followed by BP. The blame falls on BP, ultimately, whether or not the government had regulation, since those who dislike regulation will claim it or Democrats are at fault, while those who like regulation will generally claim the lack of it and Republicans were at fault. But regardless of what actually works, oil rigs can and will fail and leak. Maybe not this big, but... deep oil drilling and perhaps even more destructive shale oil drilling is down the pipeline for more places than just that one, and with it will always be this risk.

You know what I find funny, the majority in the south shouting for a year that the federal government is too big, that tea party is anti-federal government movement and yet they complain when the feds don't do one little thing and instead leave it to a private company (probably what would be left if the tea-baggers have it their way). They want little government and more corporations, then this is what they might get.

(P.S. again, barrier islands won't do anything, especially if you happen to watch TRMS; they had a nice explanation that you can extrapolate. A single storm can push up the water level by up to or over 20 feet; so unless you have a mountain of dirt to dump in there (which, mind you, will be more or less blown/washed away from any storm) as soon as the first hurricane comes close, you're boned anyway.

Ok, are the people in Illinois and Pennsylvania the ones we're talking about? Or, you know, those that border the Gulf and are getting directly affected by this? The only reason I stated that was because we're talking about the southern states and the people in those states - there being tea baggers in northern states is completely irrelevant.

The Gulf states are probably the ones complaining the most about this and also happen to be the states I mention as 'the south'.

First of all I didn't stereotype, I merely stated that a majority in the Gulf region follow a certain ideology. Are you saying that's incorrect? And what makes you think I haven't lived in the south, I actually have lived in a southern state (Florida, actually) for around 2 months several years ago. Perhaps you should stop jumping to conclusions like that without knowing all the details.
