Way back when I was 14 I made a P.E.T out of cardboard and construction paper. I built it so that you could slide the chips through and it would come out of the slot in the back. It impressed my 14 year old self.

Also, when I was 6-7, I made a pretend computer out of Styrofoam, a keyboard printout and lots of yarn. I remember being angry when mom threw it out.

So, anyone build any cool things as a kid?

I made a Zelda 1 strategy guide, all handwritten with badly-drawn maps, if that counts.

Other than that, we had Lego. We had some of the pirate sets so I'd make lush tropical islands with caves and walls for my Lego pirates.

Mostly Lego and K'Nex contraptions and structures when I was younger... though I did play with K'Nex up until about 14 or 15 I'd have to guess. Would've used Legos more often than I did, but when I moved, I lost all my Legos. I'd also take apart other toys and try to make little things with them, but I didn't do that much since I didn't often really get toys. I mostly liked stuff I could build with, or the computer.

Heh. I built one of those super Bionicles (where you get a third of the instructions with each set, then put them together afterwards) using parts from the sets that didn't match the instructions. And I went solely off the picture of the completed model.

I once built a simple contraption that was like a really hard game, for a science project. You'd move a (really small, maybe 1cm in diameter) metal hoop over a copper wire and try not to touch the wire with the hoop, or else a light bulb would come on. The goal was to get the hoop from one end of the wire to the other. It used a flashlight bulb, a light switch as a power switch, and a lantern battery. I think we may still have the thing sitting around somewhere, though I wouldn't be surprised if we threw it out. I wonder ...

I also used to build things with legos. Never had k'nex, just ... lots of legos, mostly hand-me-downs from my uncle, so I didn't really have many of the fancy new sets, just lots of basic 2x4 and 2x2 bricks of various colors.

I even did a side-fan mod to a garbage eMachine case.

Oh yeah, I used to program all sorts of stuff in C when I was 10.

I built this motherfucker back when I was 13. Dad gave me the blueprints, the parts, and the directions. I made it in three days.

Basically I did not make mind with compressed air. I used an actual chamber that contained 40cc's of dynamite (Not the compressed kind, just the combustion parts) into a 4" PVC pipe with a 2" intermedium (So it does not explode when I fire it), and the only thing that ignites this bad boy up is your standard static spark you can find on those grill lighters. It was that simple.

You can easily build one of these bad boys of your very own. Compressed air was not really my forte, I liked it when mine sounded like a fucking cannon going off.

Unless you live in the south. This gun is extremely dangerous. Don't build one

I also built a kickass plane out of legos... and..

I made a Mario costume out of my clothes, and random fabrics in my room. My hat had a bunch of fabric stapled to it, and I glued a cardboard moustache to my face. It was great.

I once built a playhouse out of paper, tape, and watercolor paints. I had a real obsession with Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, and had a little figurine of him. He was living with his sister, their daughter and sons (spools of thread and empty tape rolls). Multiple rooms, furniture, floors, etc. Even a computer. Eventually I threw it out when I got tired of it, but it sure was fun.

The one question is why did I make Pinky and Sis be married with children?!

E-Oh right, Sis is inanimate, and I suppose Pinky would be carrying these spools and rolls into the house and BAM, children, but STILL.

Legos were THE toy/hobby of choice when I was a kid. This complex monstrosity was the culmination of years of failed/broken spaceship designs, and pretty much the last thing I ever built. The sides fold open to reveal the ship's core, and it has approximately 5 billion radar dishes of unknown function.

I still have it on top of my entertainment center.

I too have a monstrosity of a LEGO collection, and have spent many years fiddling with different pieces to produce stuff from small villages to entirely random gearboxes and a Bionicle six torsos tall.

Aside from the LEGO, I also played with Meccano, which is something like Erector Set I guess and Capsela, a capsule based building system. There was something else I played with at school too, though I can't think of the name for it; basically pieces of coloured semitransparent flat plastic in varying shapes with slots on the edges.

I also made a working hovercraft from some DC motors and control circuits I stripped from a couple of broken remote control cars. Which took some time to get working properly XD

And one time when I was really young and had just started to take things apart, I tried building a robot by finding discarded PCBs and wiring them up by twisting pared wires together and around other components. I actually managed to plug the thing in. A few motors ran for a few seconds and then it caught fire.

I miss Legos so much it's not even funny. To this day I still want the massive Star Wars kits.

Before I knew about rom hacking, I drew up a map for a Metroid game using four pages front and back of looseleaf paper. I drew it up during homeroom in 8th grade over the course of at least two months, probably more. I never did actually use it in any of my hacks.
