Hey guys, I figure you may be interested in this: I just finished up writing up an analysis for a private prototype that's just been released! It was leaked a few weeks back, but I finally got around to getting approval for and writing up a TCRF page for it!

http://tcrf.net/Proto:Unreal/1997_Tech_Demo

I'm 100% sure this is the first page that has everything about the Unreal 1997 Tech Demo prototype on it. A good chunk of this stuff hasn't been shown to the public before, even after it's existence was shown to the public. While I can't release it, I can share it with you guys via a wiki page.

Basically, the analysis for a newly-leaked prototype has been released just for this wiki.

Enjoy.

Question time.

We have the Category:WiiWare games, as if this was a separate console. I think they should be all under Wii games, similar to how we treat Game Boy Color games. WHat do others think?

While it would be consistent with other consoles to merge the two, I wonder if it would be preferable instead to go with fine-grained groups on other systems as well- i.e., create a Game Boy Color sub-category for Game Boy, etc. It would make it easier to find games via the sort, I think... That's just my opinion, though. (Though GBC has the added wrinkle of games that work on both systems and what-not, so it might get too complicated)

I'd be fine with sub-categories for online services/alternate distribution models, but I'm not sure about hardware variants and add-ons. I think maybe hardware variants with new features (Game Boy Color) should get their own category, while add-ons (Sega CD, BS-X) get sub-categories. (This nicely matches how the hardware works in the real world.)

As for multi-mode games, I would categorize them under the newest model of hardware they were designed to work with, e.g. Link's Awakening DX would be filed under GBC games.

I found what seems to be a debug room on Pokemon Pearl. What you do is go to the wi-fi room and talk to the person so they let you in. Once in the room, leave the room. After you've left the room, use a walk through walls cheat to walk through the desk and back into the room. It should now be full of NPCs. About a dozen of them. Talking to any of the NPCs will freeze the game.

That is possible, however the setup of the NPCs is not completely sporadic as far as I can remember. (I have not played the game in a long time and I can't find my AR right now.) I just thought I should point it out so that someone with the proper resources could investigate it.
Also note that the game will freeze if you do not load the room normally before walking through the counter to get in.

Link's Awakening is one example where the current Wiki pages describe both, the original and the DX versions, on one page. So, those would need to be separated, where we'd get one page called "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" filed under "Game Boy games" and one called "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX" filed under "Game Boy Color games", right? A disambiguation link on top of each page, Wikipedia-style, would be useful then, I guess - like "This article is about the original Game Boy version, for Link's Awakening DX for Game Boy Color see: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX" and vice versa. (Just adding my proverbial two cents.)

I think Imajin was referring to games like Pokemon Gold and Silver, which can work on either a Gameboy Color or a regular Gameboy. I think classifying them as being for Gameboy Color is just fine, since the Gameboy compatibility is more of an extra feature than anything.

In other words, you wouldn't put the Oracle games under GBA just because they were designed with GBA features in mind (which features, I have no idea, as I never played them much on the GBA)

IIRC Oracle / Ages had a special "Advance" shop that'd open up if you were using a system other than GBC.

Yep, they did.

A couple of the collectible rings were only found in those shops, too. Too bad those didn't do anything.

I made an account, even though I don't know a whole lot about rom hacking (my knowledge is limited to PK Hack and basic Hex editing for the NES, I'm afraid. ). I'll probably be that one guy that goes around everywhere and fixes spelling/grammar errors and uploading pics.

I'm going to guess human spambot. I think you mentioned them once or twice gunking up Jul here on occasion?

Filthy vermin.

Alright, so what now? Manual activation of new accounts? We could at least weed out the obvious ones that way (like Paydayloansuk).

Dunno. Manual activations always turns me off.

I'd say nothing needs to be done if it doesn't become a real problem. It's no big deal if a spambot gets through once or twice.

It could be one of those bots that have a human validate for them.

Is there a way to automatically block and disable account creation for anyone who tries to create an account with an 'obvious' spambot name, like Paydayloans? I notice that this isn't the first time we've had someone create a Paydayloans account - another one was blocked on Feb. 8, for example.

Of course, that'd most likely just lead to even more of the 'generic' bot usernames, but then... what doesn't? (And, there's the question of whether or not anything like that should actually be done (but what non-spammer's going to want to create an account named Paydayloans? ))

I'm not a fan of manual validation. In my experience, sites with manual validation tend to take days or weeks to validate. I think that if someone finds something unused in a game to add to the wiki, they should be able to add it right away after a quick registration process. Many days later, they might have forgotten or become less motivated.

Most sites probably don't have as many administrators as TCRF does. I highly doubt it would take us "days or weeks" to get around to validating someone.

In any case, yeah, I'm probably jumping the gun a bit...I just have zero tolerance for spammers. Worthless criminals, the lot of 'em.
