I mean like a whole new page for a whole new game. :x

I don't see why regional differences would need it's own page, unless it was really big. I'm guessing the idea is to prevent regional differences from clogging up the main page, but that's usually not an issue.

The Phantasy Star II page started off as nothing more than Virtual Console differences, so I guess it's alright to make a page just for version differences. More stuff could get added on later, after all...

Agreed. You really don't need to know about everything that's unused or changed in a game in order to make a page about it. A few regional differences to start a page off is fine with me.

Due to the frequent spam problem, I think an approval process for joining the Wiki is necessary.

We weren't even testing for that.

That will just turn away potential contributors.

I have posted on the todo list what is necessary. It just needs someone to care.

It surprised me we've had so many, recently, though. Usually, they just seem to run in groups of three, and then lay low for a short period of time. Do the 'groups' all post from the same IP, roughly? (I've wondered if zombie spambots post to blogs and wikis (etc.) for a while now, as well...)

Just put the entire Wikipedia article on the Tienanmen Square Massacre on the registration page.

Or a Captcha. Whatever.

I can't remember who brought it up, but I think that making a delay before someone adds a page or can contribute after signing up was a great idea. It's a quick fix, and the spambots are only posting one page each, so it would be easy to block their spam and not have to worry much about them.

Someone said a five minute delay, which is fine, but what about a two or three minute wait too? We can just call it the "verification" delay or something.

I don't know... I'd be for the idea if it definitely does deter the spammers/bots (including the current flood of idiots, of course), even considering I do somewhat like the idea that you can just sign up and start editing right away.

But, I do know that the spammers and/or bots are willing to wait. I encountered one recently, elsewhere, that waited eight months after they'd created a user account to make their one-and-only spam post.

Well if it does that, fine. However, I say we test out having an editing hold-off for a few minutes to see if that deters the spambots from doing this. They've been coming in mass quantities and I'm getting really fuckin' irritated about it.

Same here. Anyone else like the idea of testing a 3-5 minute delay (or more)?

I'd definitely like to see if it helps.

Would a delay break their spam script, or would they still be able to spam after the delay is over?

Preferably, if a user attempts to make any changes within that time period, they're automatically banned. This would be stated in VERY LARGE LETTERS on the registration page, of course.

(this would also ban people who can't read as a nice bonus )

I added the first step (of a multi-step plan, each one more restrictive than the last) to get rid of the issue.

E-mail features had been disabled on the wiki originally, when it was just a test set up to get ready; they were never actually re-enabled.

Hence, you now require a valid email address (and verification) to register. If you are already registered, you only need the e-mail address, since you've been auto-confirmed.

This should cut down on the spam amount drastically.

Note that you should still confirm your email address, as you can now enable some mailing features!

Sorry it took so long to set up, I ended up having to install a new mail server

I've entered my email address and saved. It says I'll get a confirmation email, but it never actually gets sent.

Does the automatic system have something against AOL? I've tried entering an all-lowercase version of the same email address and clicking on "send a confirmation email" several times each. It's not in "Old Mail", it isn't in the Spam folder, it's not in my alternate AOL account, and I even deleted the cookies TCRF stores on my computer and signed back in.

Nothing works.

And I was auto-confirmed before this, so it shouldn't be happening at all.

Well, I'm thinking it's got a fault.

Worked fine for me yesterday. Also, since AOL immediately outs you as a nut-case, consider changing to a more reasonable mail probider! I know forums that ban people with AOL IPs from viewing them
