HEY LOOK! I'M POSTING FROM A COMMAND LINE!

This is actually pretty cool: http://treeki.shacknet.nu/w3m_jul.png http://treeki.shacknet.nu/w3m_jul2.png

It's a full command line browser which actually doesn't suck. It renders pages decently and it has cool stuff like tabs and a download manager.

It even has mouse support. The only bad thing really is that you can't edit stuff in textareas directly (like writing posts), you have to go into an external editor to edit it. I chose nano - when I press enter on the textarea, nano automatically opens with the post text, and it goes back into w3m once I exit it. Still, it's not that bad (just a little confusing).

I take it that w3m struggles with HTML entities?

I've used Lynx, but I didn't like the clumsy keyboard-only interface. I should try out w3m.

Lain's post №524

I would use Lynx, but it gives me an error: "Error uncompressing file" or something like that.
It happens to our Cumberland Y Service Club website as well.

I'll check out W3m.

I'm using links, which lets me enter text into the textarea directly, but more or less sucks otherwise. It won't even let me login, and it's apparently not as good at rendering as w3m. It does do transliteration pretty well, though, for what it's worth--Postcounts R Us becomes Postcounts *YA* Us.

ninja edit from a real browser:
Here's Jul in Windows' classy command line.

I'm not even gonna attempt to post on Lynx. D:

As expected, w3m is not very successful on the Acid3 test: http://treeki.shacknet.nu/w3m_acid3.png

Non-table sites like Twitter look horrible: http://treeki.shacknet.nu/w3m_twitter.png

I'd post more screenshots, but I'm not sure what sites to try out.

Я is the Cyrillic letter ja, pronounced "ya" in Russian I guess it converts smart quotes to asterisks instead of straight quotation marks as I would expect.

I assume that "meep" near the corner of the Links screenshot is Ikachan. Poor squid.

I wonder what Jul would look like on iCab 68k on my 575... because I tried it once, and I think Ikachan crashed the browser. =/

This post was made on iCab on my Performa 575 from 1993 running System 7.6.1, using a browser that was last updated for 68K in 2006. I had to disable the JavaScript and CSS to even get Jul to load on here.

I also have Netscape Communicator 4.0.8 (68K version) on here as well, from circa 1998. Although I don't use it that often, some sites give me trouble in iCab with downloading some files.

The only time I've ever used a text-only browser is when I was working on a server that only had a CLI. I'll have to try w3m next time I have that need, though. I used Lynx, and I had trouble getting the hang of it. Come to think of it, I just assumed it didn't have mouse support. It very well might.

Damn, I wish I knew of this when I was stuck on AOL. :|

I used Lynx a lot when I was. Hell, I still have the icon pinned to the taskbar! Maybe I should remove it, now that I'm on a decent connection (and thus, don't have to worry about images taking forever anymore)...
