24 bit and 32 bit are basically the same thing, Just the one is stored with a padding byte to keep memory accesses on word boundaries (it's slower, otherwise...). Also, the ipod screen I believe is only capable if displaying 18 bit color (6 bits per channel).

I merely thought that 4 x was the standard.

I could've sworn 32bit added 8 bits for alpha that were used internally :s

...maybe but how would that work? Even if it is that, it's just some nonsensical value that has no purpose, a monitor screen can't be made translucent as far as I know. :p I could see it being used per window for window alpha given some fancy compositor or something, but for the entire framebuffer? I mean, there's a chance you're right but this seems heavily implementation/OS/etc specific.
