My friend brought back some absinthe from Europe a few years back and I was really excited to try it... until I tasted it. I am not a fan of licorice/anise flavored things.

I've never had absinthe (also known as Green Fairy) before... wonder if it's legal in New York yet

I hit the Rumple Minze pretty hard last Friday after a night of drinking beer in celebration (with friends) of me getting my degree.

Let's just say from 3 to 5 that night I have no recollection of what happened.

And I almost missed the graduation commencement the next morning.

Never tried absinthe, but from the sounds of it I wouldn't be a huge fan. Not a big licorice guy.

I am now quite sick from the absinthe.

As for its aniseed flavour, it's not so bad if you have it properly. The one time a friend of mine gave me a shot of pure absinthe to try, it was AWFUL.

You don't drink the absinthe by itself. You need a sugar cube, and ice water.

There are two ways to drink the absinthe. The Bohemian/Czech method which is more modern: the sugar cube is soaked in the absinthe, and then placed on an absinthe spoon above the absinthe and set on fire. There are a number of things you can do from there (including letting the cube set the absinthe itself on fire), but last night the cube was allowed to burn out and the sugar caremelised, before it was dropped back into the absinthe, topped up with more absinthe, and then the drink is topped up with ice water.

You don't have it without the ice water, and seldom have it without the sugar.

For the French variation, you don't burn the cube, it sits on top the absinthe spoon, and iced water is very slowly dripped onto the cube, which dissolves and drips into the absinthe, causing a cloudy white appearance. The sugar reduces the bitter taste and improves the flavour.

Drinking neat absinthe has always been considered "socially unacceptable" amongst absinthe drinkers. Historically, people who drink their absinthe neat are alcoholics or desperate.

Yeah I tried drinking Absinthe in the past the way it was ment to be drinked. I did not exactly "Trip" as most people have claimed. But I did feel really awkward.

It's just not my kinda drink.

I need to try this! Especially since it involves fire. Fire and booze?

I didn't "trip", I was just drunk. Quite drunk. The high alcohol content tends to "hit" you a little.

The best part was the bit at the bottom of the drink where the sugar had settled. It's quite bitter unless the sugar is mixed in: that's why I kept swirling my drink to mix in the sugar.

The Czech/Bohemian style is fun, but considered an "abomination" by some absinthe drinkers. It is a modern invention: only since about the 1990's, stemming from the popularity of drinks like the flaming sambuca.

Sounds like a winning combination.

If you wanna burn down your house / apartment complex / dormitary / what have you.

Although, ever since I discovered the fact that anything >= 100 proof (roughly) starts on fire... I've been having a good time with that. Burnt my lips one night messing around with that.

A few years ago, some idiot threw a lit cigarette down the trash chute back when I lived on campus. At like 4:30 in the morning. We had to evacuate the building and go to one of the school buildings and just kinda hang there for maybe an hour or two.

Hence why 151 has a flame-arresting opening.

I have a video on disc of my friend Loki and I doing this. Except not only do we light them up, but I light a cigarette off his hand while it was totally on fire with everclear. But for the life of me I can not convert it to Youtube.
