OMG I love you. This is what I really wanted most out of all the files yet to be editable (this and the models) and you gave us how. Well done.

Cool guide!
I will try it out when i have time!

There's one thing you should change. The latest version of the editor does let you change music without hex editing. Select a view and change its settings on the left pane.

Possibly in the future NSMB Editor will have built-in sdat editing support.

Can you put this into NSMB editor?
Like the tile set editor. With import support for .wav files.

The only problem with that is that we (and by we I mean dirbaio and probably Treeki, although I'll try and help) wound need to make our own version of the tools used.

yeah. Some are open-source, but will have to be ported to c#.
Anyway, sound hacking was in my to-do list for the editor, but it just stayed there because it was a lot to do from scratch ...

Which technique did you try or did you try them all? What exactly were you trying to do? Could you explain in further detail how the tracks were out of sync? You're more than welcome to send me a copy of the sound_data.sdat file you hacked if you like that way I can have a look as well.

It sound off but the tune can be hear. Good job to make it work, I failed miserably. Try with different midis(if done so), they vary in quality and sound.

this was working for me fine, until i imported the sound_data.sdat into the game. i played it and most of the game has no sound and in parts where there is sound, it is screwed to hell.

Can I use a .wav file instead of a .mid? I want to use a song from a band, and when I convert it into .mid, it's crap. Also, my .mid doesn't convert with the midi2sseq.exe.

No, it would have to be a .mid because only .mids can be converted to .sseq. And some .mids just don't work with midi2sseq, music hacking is a frustrating process.

then can anyone link me to a good, lossless .wav to .mid converter? Every time I convert to .mid, it turns into a crappy piano track that barely resembles the original song.

There is nothing like a "good, lossless .wav to .mid converter" - the midi format has no way to store raw sound data. It just stores instruments and notes.

so then it's impossible to import a song into the game that features any sort of singing, or too many instruments?

would there be any way of overriding the way the game reads music files, or is that an impossibility?

Well... Basically, it would take a lot of time. You can't imagine what is a whole ocean of ASM code like THIS. Obviously, not commented and without function and variable names, and to try to find out what is it doing.

Basically, that's what is needed to rewrite the game's code...
I don't have that much patience and time.
