Before I get started, here is some relevant information:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2
Card: ATI RADEON X700PRO
DX: Version 9.0c

On a whim yesterday, I decided to update my video driver form my system. I thought, no problem, I've done this before and nothing bad happened. I updated them last November, and new ones were released this month, so porbably a good idea! Maybe not... The new drivers refused to install! Gave me the following warning while trying to install:

Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system.

This is puzzling, because the site made me choose my operating system and video card before sending me to the page that contained the download for the driver. When that didn't work, I got a little annoyed, and downloaded last month's driver, which also didn't install. At that point, I said "screw this, I'll reinstall the old driver!" So I found the old driver's installer, and tried to put that back. Guess what? New error! This one complaining about installing VGA drivers before installing these... Now I'm a little puzzled, because ATI's instruction are always to completely uninstall previous video drivers before installing new ones...

So I submitted a service ticket to ATI's support site... I'd have called, but phone support stops at 3:00PM EST Fridays, and isn't there at all on weekends... The first answer they gave me didn't work, and I knew it wouldn't, as they suggested I manually install the driver. The error with that one is:

The system cannot find the file specified.

Which is a standard Windows response when it fails to install a driver. I have no idea what's wrong, the only two major things that have changed since my last upgrade is that I'm now using Service Pack 2 of XP Home, and we have a new 19" LCD monitor that's using DVI connection, compared to our old 21" CRT using standard 15-pin VGA. I don't see what the problem is...?

In order to force the display to show up correctly (as in, not 640x480, or whatever it was), I downloaded and installed Omega Drivers based on verion 7.4 of ATI's Catalyst drivers. There's a problem with this, too, though. Although next to the video card in the device manager in parenthesis it says Omega 3.8.360, there is actually no video driver loaded. My video card is actually disabled as far as Windows is concerned, but otherwise, everything seems fine. I hesitate to try to actually use the video card by using a program that would require it, as I don't want to either further destabilize this system, or to somehow kill the card because it didn't get any instructions to turn on the fan, or something...

Anybody have any idea what I can do? I'm kinda desparate right now...

Ignore this. I updated DirectX, then manually installed the Omega Drivers, and they installed fine...

I HATE UPDATING DRIVERS
