For a second there, I thought this was Wired vs Wireless keyboards o_O

Anyway, I use a custom QWERTY layout with additional diacritics and symbols on AltGr ^_~

There's also QWERTZ for German Some other languages use the QWERTZ layout as well.

I have a QWERTY, although it's a British keyboard, so it has £ and some symbols are in different places from a US or Australian keyboard

QWERTY. Standard U.S. English layout. No special keys except for "POWER" "WAKE UP" "SLEEP", which I never use. I think I even disabled them or something.

Micro Innovations, I bet. I had one of those keyboards.

The best part was that those keys took up the space between the arrow keys and the Delete/End/PageDn row, so... yeah.

Thank God those keys didn't work.

It's annoying how standard American Windows keyboards lack the extra key found in keyboards elsewhere in the world, too >_>

And, yea, Caps Lock's location on most keyboards today is really annoying... since I remember it was in the bottom-left on my old Mac, where Control is on newer keyboards -_-

My old AOpen keyboard has a power key I'd hit while trying to print screen.

I actually pried the key caps off. My current keyboard, a Logitech Wireless Desktop EX 100 keyboard-mouse combo has FN + F9 for hibernate, which is also useless because I can't seem to wake up this computer when running 7.

Yeah, it is a Micro Innovations, although the "Power", etc. keys are up at the top where PrintScreen/Scroll Lock/Pause|Break normally are.

That means the Power key is where the PrintScreen key normally is! And that also means I accidentally hit the Power key a few times when I first got this keyboard trying to take screenshots of my desktop!

Thank God they don't work, indeed. I don't remember if I disabled them, or if they just... inexplicably don't work for some reason. I think it's the latter.

Seriously, why can't all the keyboards be organized the same way? Why can't everyone use AZERTY (or QWERTY) keyboards?

And yeah, must be annoying to accidentally turn off your computer and lose all your unsaved work every time you want to take a screenshot.

I think it has to do with letter frequencies. Some letters that are more common in English (like W) are relatively rare in other languages (like French). The same goes for the other way around (in German, Z is much more common than in English, so their keyboard layout is QWERTZ).

And yes, I basically stole everything I wrote above from these pages. Whistle.

And what about languages that use a different writing system (Greek, Russian, Arabic, Japanese, etc.)?

Even languages with a Latin-based writing system often have special symbols like É or Ö

I got frustrated with German keyboards though. I would constantly get Z and Y mixed up and stumble over symbols

I prefer the QWERTY layout... I tried using a Dvořák layout, but I didn't really like it... felt too awkward >_>

Also, trying to remember where keys are on a Russian or Czech layout is hard, so I just use my custom US-based layout and my custom Cyrillic keyboard ^_^

Anyway, I don't have any trouble using IMEs for Japanese either, since I pretty much know how to input the text properly ^_~

That makes sense, except French Canadian also uses QWERTY instead of AZERTY


And yep, that's what I have here ... it's pretty much the U.S. QWERTY layout with a few characters moved around (@ { [ ] } " ' ^ etc.), AltGr/AltCar/rightAlt/whatever enabled (and often needed), and support for lots of accented letters (but not all)

For the other keys (Insert, etc.), I have them at the old common locations and don't really like when keyboards move those (CapsLock was always in the middle left for me though, even on my old Macintosh keyboard)

At least it's not like the Atari ST keyboard, with Caps Lock and Control swapped.

Yea... older computers, like the Commodore 64, had a Shift Lock key instead, which would produce not only capital letters, but the shifted numbers/symbols too o_O

I believe that this is reminiscent of old typewriters, where the shift lock key would actually lock the typewriter into the upper position until you pressed Shift again >_>

QWERTY, although there are some minor inconveniences about this particular one; a few keys are resized, which took me a while to adapt. The backspace key on a standard keyboard is usually two standard letter keys in width, as enter/right shift are about two and a half. And the pipe/backslash key is right under backspace, and above enter.

However, with this particular model, the backspace key is the size of a standard key, the pipe/backslash key is right to the left of the backspace, the enter key is huge (with an odd shape, I might add), and the right shift key shrunk to one and a half standard keys in size, with this stupid "turbo" button to its right that doesn't even work. Took me a couple of months to get the hang of it.

There's also a myriad of several other small buttons at the very top of the keyboard; stop/play/volume/etc. keys for music, browser keys, and ones that shut down the comp or put it in sleep mode.

Yeah, backslash keys tend to pop up in inconvenient places

My favourite place for the backslash was from an old Packard Bell keyboard where it was between Alt Graph and Ctrl. Nice and out of the way. Too bad the Windows/Menu keys killed that position

properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
